My younger bro who knows basically nothing about cars could easily tell the f-type apart from an s550.

I didn't say they were identical. Just that one design was trivially tweaked from the other.

Since the Moray Callum was in charge of the design of S550 and his brother Ian Callum designed the DB9... The whole bodylines of the S550 are pretty much 1:1 copied from the DB9.

Thanks Ace, that was my understanding as well, so I was a little confused about the Jag reference. I guess both Aston Martin and the Mustang designers could have ripped off Jaguar, but that would surprise me.

When the DB7 and later DB9 were designed by Ian Callum, both Aston Martin and Jaguar were owned by Ford. Ian Callum stayed as head of Jaguar design until just a couple of years ago, so his influence is still strong in the design of both current Jaguars and Astons.

You wouldn't know this wasn't an S550 if it didn't have badges and had the lights taped up.

I could see my wife not knowing the difference, but they seem very different to me. They do have some similarities, but there are enough differences that are easy to notice. Length of the hood, the way the bottom of the rear side glass turns up, the curves at the bottom of the rear glass, the shape of the tail panel...

My car, a 5th gen explorer, has these black parts over the a, b, and c pillars to give it this cool contrasting look. In the 6years we've owned it, the color has remained the same. The oldest explorers in this gen are 12 years old by this point, and they don't seen to be having any issues either. I wouldn't be too concerned, this isn't the 80s and 90s when cars fell apart 5 seconds after pulling off the lot.

In the last 20 years, the automotive industry has advanced their plastics. Your car's plastic faded within 5 years and continued to get worse. Go look at a 6+ year old early model s550 and take a look at the plastics.

Ok, but it's plastic, so it should be relatively easy and cheap to replace it if you want to. Plus we've established it takes well over a decade for most modern plastics to fade.
