Where do you find 98 Octane?
I have a New 1965 Mustang Owner’s Manual.
It states the 289 with a 4-Barrel Carb. must use Premium, (at least 99 Octane).
The 289 Hi-Performance must use Premium , (at least 101 Octane).
I believe 98 Octane in the 5.0 would make a big difference.
Here in Colorado 91 is as high as we can get.
I use 91 Octane in my Lawnmower.
Why not use it in your Experience Mustang?
I haven’t seen 98 Octane since the 1960’s Early 70’s.

LouG location sez he's in New Zealand, Their 98 AKI is our 93 [ R+M/2 ]

New Zeland rates their octane differently.

The Hipo 289 had a higher compression ratio (10.1), than the standard 289. In those days high compression engines required premium fuel to reduce spark knock. Timing was still largely done with vacuum advance (although the hipo was mechanical).

You are missing a bit of the context.

Take a look at the page (I've attached a copy)...

It's 98 Octane with an Asterisk which specifies the Research Octane Method / Number.

This is RON. We use AKI in the states - so 98 RON = 93 Octane as you see in the USA Fuel Pumps.

We have the Euro standard, most of the world in fact, which is RON, Research Octane Number
98 RON is your 93 MON. It's our standard Premium octane. Some gas stations have 100 RON on pump. We can't get E85 on pump anymore either.

Thank You for for the detailed response.
I was not aware of the different ways of measuring Octane.

Thanks! I’ll be damned! Good to know.

I’ve seen posts saying run E30.

Without a tune will it respond ???

if so, any dynos showing that? Loved the dyno earlier showing octane differences
Yes it will respond positively

It runs really nice and strong. I'm on my 3rd tank so fully adapted
Can you explain what e30 is? Honestly all these different fuels are hard to keep up with.

30% ethenol.
Most 91/93 gas is 10% ethenol already.
Use ECAL app to put in how much 93 you have and it’s e content, then put in desired E content you want which is 25-30 . Put in the ethenol content of the e85 your mixing in and it will tell you how many gallons of e85 to add .
In my case I get e70 so it’s about 4 gallons of a 16 gallon tank.
Make sense?

Yeah that sounds way too complicated lol. Not to mention we dont get 93 here, and E85 is hard to come by. I'm good. 😉
