Getting an A10

however, I love shifting... Have a Harley, many manual vehicles in the past.

BUT, at 60 years old, 2 left knee operations (and waiting for replacement) no way could I go manual.

Now, if they could have gone REALLY OLD SCHOOL, and put in 4 speed manual shifts (like my first 65 'Stang), I probably would have gone that way. LOL
Roommate just had a couple of Striker knee replacements and the first one is already to the point at 3 months that the knee is like it was 40 years ago. Be careful because the older surgery is more invasive and recovery is longer but a lot of doctors are still using the older knee.

when I need to downshift to say pass a car, I can anticipate the need, determine the timing of my shift and do so in a way that ensures I have the power of the lower gear precisely when I want/need it. As opposed to an automatic that has to get a signal that the accelerator is pushed, the RPMs are climbing and a downshift is required, then it downshifts and can give the power you need to pass a car.

as I said, in a manual I can anticipate the need to downshift given my driving needs before the transmission would even begin to receive any indication that it needs to shift.

does this make sense now?

I think you are missing the point of the paddles. Especially, if I want to pass at highway speeds. You can downshift whenever you want, to pass someone, or in anticipation of S curves ahead. I will often do so before there is space for me to make my move. Used to do the same with my manual tranny and had far fewer gears to choose from. When the space is available, I can apply whatever acceleration I need or want. If I down shifted two speeds, trust me, there is no lag. I did this on US22 near Bethlehem, two days ago, and I am sure the cars I passed think they were buzzed by an F16. Nothing like a normally aspirated engine, with a concrete wall next to it. Vroooom. Randomly the other day, this idea hit me. Since the 2024 gt will shift at paddle command when in automatic mode, I was like, hmm wonder if i double tap it and spiritedly hit it to pass, and OMG it's the most fun way to pass EVER. You get that monster rev match blip and then it just goes, like hot damn I've been driving this thing all wrong. It's more fun than a manual honestly, and i absolutely hate to admit that coming from a long line of manual mustangs.

Mine does have the 3.55 rear dif gear and it makes a heck of a difference, it's always in a better powerband, while yeah, maybe at 85mph interstate driving i may lose a 1-2mpg, i feel it's justified because the 10R80 with a 3.55 is freakin' amazing.

But man, double tap or triple tap that paddle to pass, man it's fun. :like:

Not sure why this one popped up again but I might as well give it an update. To add to what I wrote prior just drive your automatic, with paddles, like it's a stick. Downshift when you would normally downshift and up shift when necessary. Nobody says you have to stay in the gear the car chooses! Glenn

Been doing that for as long as they've had paddles in cars. I can't remember which was my first one; it was so long ago. Probably 15 years, maybe more, not sure! It's been a while. OK! I'll stop! Glenn

You can do the same thing in the automatic. You want to pass, (while in auto mode) you can just hit the downshift paddle to pick the gear you want. 1, 2 3, taps and it will instantly no lag go to that gear with a rev match blip. When I say there is no way a manual could do the same as quickly and controlled I'm not kidding. I want to pass, i'll double tap the downshift paddle and it'll drop me two gears and I'm 3k rpm range and it'll go, You can literally tap it to any gear and it will instantly shift to it without lag, it literally takes a manual longer to press the clutch and move the shifter, I'm coming from about 8 fox body mustangs, 7 of them manuals, a 99 cobra, and a 03 cobra with a whipple and 610rwhp. Trust me, I get the whole manual thing. 100%. I've raced, done it all in mustangs and there is nothing as fun as a double tap, tripple tap, drop a gear and get outta here feeling.

There is some lag on upshifts, and that works more based on load and what the car thinks your doing and trying to help you, and I've learned how to shift it as I want it to shift, but on the downshifts it's instant no lag. Now I'm not saying there isn't any weirdness with the auto, there is. LOL but the lion doesn't concern himself with that. :cwl:

And I can tell you this, no stock 5.0 manual is touching me at the drag strip. That 10R80 in drag mode, man the way it no lift style shifts is insane. Those shifts are instant and have this big surge of acceleration in each shift, unless you drive one you won't understand but the manual doesn't do it and can't touch it. I'm at HMP track twice a month I welcome anyone in Texas with a stock manual to come f'around and find out what that automatic is all about at the track in drag mode. :cwl:

No disrespect, because, manuals have their own style of driving and I'm in NO way saying it's not fun, heck I'll even give you that it's better connected to the car, better feeling, but what ford has done with the 10R80 automatic is down right amazing.

If I was never going to race, I'd probably consider a manual. But in today's world, a manual just cannot keep up not with the era of 10 speeds. It's just ALWAYS in the powerband.

Exactly! My point a few minutes ago! The 10R80 is not your grandmother's automatic! I drive it like a stick every time I'm driving! It's a blast! Glenn

I did the same thing the other day in my wife's Mustang to get around a slow-poke in the left lane. Subtly double-tapped the paddle, gunned it some, instantly increased speed by 10 mph or more, upshifted and let off the gas. I do the same thing in my GTO with the auto shifter, usually just pulling it down to 3rd gear (out of 4) which is enough most times. If I really gun it, it'll downshift to 2nd and away we go. :)

The A10 is not just faster at the Drag Strip, but daily driving IMO is better. Use the paddles !!! Having said that, the first change i made was to add the gear indicator to the tach using FORSCAN. Otherwise it makes it harder to know how or when to downshift using paddles. And tuners can improve A10 shifting as well.

OH i misread your comment then, I thought you were saying the manual was better. Heck yea!

I was a big "manuals rule the world" kind of guy for ever, until my wife and I bought the 2011 GT. I knew then automatics had won, they had come to a point where they actually get better gas mileage, are quicker and smooth when you just want to cruise.

That mustang (at nearly sealevel) at Houston Raceway quarter mile would just run 12.7's all day long on stock 245s bone stock like a bracket car.

I would run 12.7, and my buddy with 2011 bone stock manual would run 13.0 (when he could get a good launch, about 90% of the time).

I knew then, man manuals are gonna be a nostalgia type of thing going forward.

The rev matching in an automatic is new to me. It just makes the car feel like a complete badass. :cwl:

I've said long ago, Man you can make anything fast these days. Slap on a turbo and it'll go fast. Today i feel it's moving more to the experience and not just being fast.

To get the same kind of thing out of a fox body, the one automatic i had (ex-texas dps police coup) you had to do a manual valve body to. But then, it's was a manual without a clutch basically, and the shifts would hit so hard it'd give you whiplash :cwl::cwl::cwl: Ends up being a "street/strip" car that was great on the strip but was really annoying on the street.

Today, with the 10sp autos, I feel like autos have finally come to the point where you actually can have both. Tight gearing to keep it in the power band (that part is just sick) manual fun using paddles and then, if you just wanna cruise with the wife and have it be smooth, it'll do that too.

I mean I've always said, 400-500 is about the sweet spot for a GT sports car to be quick, fun and have that experience. Ford has done it man. 480hp stock, 500+ with a tune, like to me, it's the ultimate mustang. If you want more, slap on some turbos or supercharger, but for me, it's the ultimate fun street/strip car that does it all well.

Yeah it's not "perfect" but I love where Ford is going with the 10sp.

Ditto what you said. I think it is a fantastic car for cruising. I drove it approximately 500 miles to Canada and back. It was so much fun and comfortable on the highway. I never tired, and that's unusual for a 78-year-old. When I got to my destination, I was not fatigued at all and felt I could easily go a few more hours. At home, there is an almost limitless number of twisties to quench your thirst. I think there is some kind of aura about owning a GT because I sometimes will walk into a room, and my wife will say, "You're going for a ride, aren't you?" Actually happened again the day before we got our last snowstorm. I thought if this is bad, I won't get to drive it for a while (3 days so far), so off I went. The Coyote with 480 hp is sweet, the 10R80 is fantastic, the handling and ride are exceptional. To me, as expensive as it might be, it is a poor man’s super car. I can do almost anything with this car from super comfortable cruising to throwing it into corners and know that it will not go squirrely on me, unless I had a senior moment. I've had a few where the monstrous brakes saved my bacon. I am enjoying the hell out of this car more than any other I've owned! Mostly because I feel this is a car designed to drive, not just to provide transportation. Glenn

The only thing I use, unless downshifting at low speed (20-25 and under), is the engine noise. At lower speeds, there is almost no engine noise, only exhaust noise. When I drive a stick, I can often shift without using the clutch. Of course, I have to be very familiar with the car to be able to do so. And sometimes it freaks out the person in the passenger seat! So, bonus! Glenn

You got that right! I drove manuals from the 60s to 2008 when I had to get a truck to pull my boat. Actually, when I shopped for my GT, I wanted a stick. I went to four or five dealers, and nobody had sticks. Finally, the last dealer, ironically closest to my home, also had an automatic. I was going to walk, and the salesman said, ”Take it for a test drive because you are going to be very surprised.” Needless to say, it's in my garage! Sold before I even figured out how great it really is! Glenn

The paddles are cool for sure! As an alternative, without using the paddles, how far down you press the accelerator determines what gear it drops down to. I can basically pick what gear to drop down to with the pedal alone.
