S650 cupholder ambient light - DIY install

For those without the skills or those afraid to pop the cup holders on your new mustang, I’m guilty of both! Amazon has a drop in option.

Actually not bad.

I hate taking off interior trim pieces, once those clips are loose, the rattles are free to live with you forever.

So these seem like a decent option for those late night drives with a drink

@Stangerous i know you said you replaced your shifter. Were you able to remove the top of the center console without taking the whole shifter assembly off? If you need to are there just 2 screws holding the shifter in?

There are only two phillip screws on the front side of the shifter holding it on, I put a shop cloth down and magnetized my bit just in case I were to drop a screw. they are very small. It helps to put the shifter in M to remove them.

i took about 4 hours to install the cupholder lights. so happy with the result! i even wrapped the wires in tessa tape so it looks fairly factory

Out of curiosity, since brightness is relative, etc, blah blah. By any chance is it bright enough to be perceived by peripheral? Checking for the corner distraction light potential. You know, that type of light dad would tell you to turn out while he was driving type of thing.

i would say no. you can see it out of the corner of your eye, but its not really distracting, at least to me

damn i haven’t looked into this in a minute lol. i’d have to get both plugs male and female and then convert it to a Y plug that’ll go into the cup holder.

i got a chance to do the install and had a few complications. Easy fix, but slowed down the install. They changed the wire harness on the bottom of the cup holder so there was a clearance issue with a screw on the passenger side. Remove the screw that’s hitting on the cup holder, nip the top plastic, reinstall the screw. Then trim the 3 raised ridges in the inside of the console then everything will fit. Took about 5 1/2 hours due to figuring out the clearance issues between the upper and lower console. I also added a picture of what the light looks like in the driver foot well. To remove the light, twist clockwise then push it out, disconnect the harness directly behind the light and you can use t-taps to make the connection if you don’t want to do any wire cutting. It came out nice and was for the most part plug and play. Take your time,

why the resistors on the harness? shouldn’t they work by tapping into the lights from the right footwell lighting directly?
