Here's a question.......and I'll admit it made my head hurt thinking about it. A couple of websites are now repeating this info that production of the '23 will start in March 2023. On one FB group, a quy working at Flatrock said it was "BS......do you really think we won't build Mustangs for 3 months at the start of 2023?" His view was that you couldn't build '22MY cars in 2023, so there would be a 3 month gap from the '22 ending and the '23 starting.

This got me thinking.......I don't recall a time when the "old" model year was built in the "new calendar year". Traditionally, the new Model Year has started around September/October......so it's clear the "new model year" can be built in the "old calendar year" (ie....the '18MY was built in 2017).......but is the opposite still possible? Can a '22MY be built in 2023? I say yes, as it'll still have a '22 VIN.

Of course, it could be that he's right. If '22 production ends in late December 2022, that would give 3 months to retool for S650. That seems a long time though. Traditionally, the model year change over coincided with the Summer plant closure which lasted 2 weeks.

I'm digging the front end design of that electric concept shown by Elvis. But the fenders are too bulbous, and the rear end needs work to make it more mustangy.

OK....here's an interesting take!

https://fordauthority.com/2021/12/new-report-suggests-s650-ford-mustang-wont-arrive-until-2024my/

"It's been believed for some time now that the 2023 Ford Mustang would represent the launch of the new, next-generation S650 Ford Mustang. However, a new report from AutoForecast Solutions indicates that S650 Ford Mustang production won’t begin until until March 2023, and the new version of Ford’s iconic pony car won’t launch until the 2024 model year"

So.....would the '23MY be the shortest ever? Or would they/could they skip the '23MY all together??

Well, that's a rendering based on the Giugiaro concept from 2006. I personally think that influenced the 2010 S197 refresh.

Giugiaro.jpg
The 2010 refresh was teased by the Giugiaro concept, especially on the more sculpted interior dash. The 2010 interior was finished by the time Giugiaro was working on the concept.

It's clear as radical as the Mustang faithful thought it was, J Mays was using it as a medium to tease his future vision for the Mustang. For both the 2009/2010 car and also a foundation for its replacement due by the 50th anniversary.

These internal photos were taken in September of 2005, at the near culmination of the design proposal selection process. It was designated in 2005 as the "2009 Mustang". The concept didn't exist in 2005.

I believe Ford finished that whole process on March 14, 2006, exactly 36 months ahead of the updated models going on sale in March 2009.

Ford actually designed S197 II as the 2009 Mustang, but somewhere between 2006 and 2007, the effort got delayed into early 2009, so it was easy for marketing to call it a 2010 model instead. Ford weirdly kept doing that "early release"...

Releasing the 2011 models in March 2010, with new Coyote V8 and Cyclone V6. 2012 models like the Boss 302 in March 2011. The updated 2013 models in March 2012. And ditto for the last model year, in early 2013. Things returned to normal, with the September 2014 launch of the redesigned 2015s, then global in 2015.

In March 2022, all Ford dealers will generally have fulfilled some 2022MY orders (or have some 2022MY stock, from Job 1 of January 3).

Funny how since MY 2021, it's same model year, same calendar year launch.

I am very disappointed, but not surprised at how Ford has fallen now 34 months behind on this car. From an early projected Job 1 of May 2020 on CD6 as of early 2016, to now March 2023 Job 1. Makes it harder to keep up with its replacement, if you push back a refresh into MY2027.

With that being said, Happy New Year!

Happy New Year M7Gers!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, @amk91 The '10 refresh was the first time I actively hunted down the spyshots.......and they were easy to come by back then! The Mustang Source was the place to be at the time and I know my local UK forum members got sick and tired of me posting photos of "Mustangs in duvets" :giggle: .

A March 2023 start of production is definitely disappointing but as I said previously, if it means a launch with minimal issues, it'll be a good thing.

My assumption is we'll still get the car here in the UK in RHD. And we can thank our Australian friends for that as that market seems to be the biggest outside North America. Whilst sales here have never been massive in comparison (10k and counting so far), that's still a quantum leap when you consider there might only be 10k 1965-2014 Mustangs in the UK in total. Right now though, our choice is dwindling in the showroom for the '22MY. The Ecoboost was dropped for the '20MY (sales were 80/20 in favour of the GT)......and now thanks to a looming revised "drive by noise" test, the manual GT won't pass this so, it too, has been dropped. An auto GT is the only choice now. I'm assuming RHD manual GT S650s could have the exhaust modified to pass the test.....at least I hope so! There will only be a handful of Mach 1s, but these are only for those who ordered a '21 Mach 1 and had their order "cancelled". At least Ford Australia are still giving their customers the full range.......including the California Special for the first time ever! I'd be seriously tempted with a Grabber Blue Metallic Cali Special!

So, the potential long '22MY isn't good for UK Mustang sales with such a limited choice.

Happy New Year to you too Paul @Twin Turbo

Thanks for all the time and energy you volunteer to keep 7g and 6g ticking over each year. Your devotion to the cause is is exemplary.

Sorry to hear of the ever shrinking options you have in the UK. It makes me all the more grateful for the current model options we here in Australia.

Does this mean changes in the plans that spoke of a quick update (2025 / 2026my) introducing the hybrid version?
Could we see the hybrid at the beginning of the S650?

Unlikely. I'd imagine everything just get pushed back a few months. With a new generation, even one heavily based on the existing car, you still don't want to reveal everything at once. A couple of reasons......firstly, Ford will likely want to base car to prove itself reliable before releasing hybrid tech. Secondly, rolling out new versions over a couple of years keeps the product in the news.

If the production is delayed for the 2023 Mustang , I suspect the 2022 GT500 production could go to the end of 2022. Not a bad deal at all.
