I've always loved what Saleen did to this car, especially when it's in this color. I remember when I first saw what Roush did, I also liked it, but I don't think their mods have aged as gracefully as Saleen's.

I think Ford should do what they did on S550: Take a good look at the most beautiful sportscars out there and copy some lines to makes it a more muscular 4 seat coupe.

My top picks would be the Ferrari Roma and the AM Vantage. They bodylines of the S550 are already quite similiar, make the frontend not as low and they could be great inspiration

What I really hope is we Ford gets a 2 seater, coupe and 4dr Mustang trims.
Ford can then push the boundaries on design and weight.

I don't see Ford doing a 2-seater. Especially with the Challenger surpassing the Mustang in sales and what happened to the Camaro it's obvious the biggest share of the target audience is caring more about space/practicality than performance. Also a 2-seater would demand a totally different weigth distrubution to have any advantages, so it's way harder to make the 2+2 to a 4 door car.
With all the delays for S650 I think even Ford was struggling hard to decide in which direction the Mustang should go

Yeah, its because more people are buying them :giggle:

On a slightly more serious note, Challenger has.......er.......challenged Mustang closely for top sales the last couple of years. Why did it win this year? Probably for lot of reasons, but two that I think are relevant are that buyers know Challenger dies in 2024 so there's probably a significant number of people "buying them now or never". Plus, Flatrock was down for 2 months out of the 12 due to chip shortages and the fuel leak issue, so less Mustangs were built than would normally be the case.

That's not to defend Mustang per se, as it's an ageing product and if you have one already, there's not a lot of reasons to trade up to a newer one.

I'm a sucker for retro style though (I have 2 S197s) and the Challenger nailed it in the looks department. The fact it seats 5 and has the biggest trunk of the 3 pony cars, means it also nails the "practical" toy aspect, too. Having said that, it's also an ageing product (one real refresh since 2008!!) so you'd also think there wouldn't be reasons for people to trade their existing Challenger against a new one. And yet here we are!

I don't know, I wouldn't say the designers of the Challenger nailed the design. The front looks great, but when viewed from the side and rear, it has some of the worst proportions of any sports car I've ever seen. Looks like a wannabe pickup truck with how long the trunk is. The Camaro and mustang have these nice, long hood, short trunk designs, as God intended lol. The challenger has an ass so big, it puts most of the Kardashians to shame.

So this tells me that Challengers sales are more or less in line with Ford being able to produce less Mustangs.

I still believe that Ford is completely untapped in the 2 seater market and being able to create a platforms that rivals Corvette. It’s either Mustang or GT and the price difference is 10-20x.

The same thing goes for a 4 door which is currently dominated by Honda’s and BMWs. I see the relevance and respect the tradition and history, but purely from economics POV - Ford doesn’t anything to offer in 2 major segments of the car market and I see that as a big miss.

I would have bought a Ford instead of my current pre order of Z06 even if it was slightly behind. I know many would. I think with Mach E I think Ford sees the writing on the wall and found that they needed to enter that particular segment badly or be left behind for nothing. I see the company is willing to adapt. Let’s see what they do with S650 further.

Honestly I don't think they can. They did a great job upgrading what they have with S550 to make the GT PP2 and GT500 this good. Their engineer might be able to pull this off. But I don't have any hope in Fords management to green light anything that focussed on performance.

I even expect the S650 GT to only slightly outperform the 18+ GTs beside whatever acceleration numbers Ford can claim if Hybrid-AWD is true.

That is what Mustang is - a 2 door coupe and convertible. No more 2 door, then I'm out.

Challenger is offering more SE/trims and $1500 discount. Ford Dealers charging over MSRP. Funny how Ford is telling dealerships not to gouge new electric pickup, but not other models.

They may be waiting to see what the all new 2023 Challenger has in store.

There is no nextgen Challenger, they only have the EV. With the S650 not being EV, I don't think they are direct competitors anymore
