How long do you think the S650 will stay in production?

How long will the S650 be produced?

That’s what I’m curious about honestly, just because in other worlds that small amount of sales was just enough to justify new platforms. For example Supra and GR86 are drops in the bucket in sales comparably, they were collaboration cars for that reason, but now they’re developing/developed 3 new sports car platforms.

Obviously it’s Toyota and they sell so many other cars, but it’s something that is really interesting to me. You could say the same for Corvette/Chevy too.

I just want to be a fly on the wall in that Ford meeting. Lol
Supra is a BMW platform

GR86 is a shared platform

The platform can be very flexible such as the MQB used in all sorts of cars

I know that, they did that because historically they don’t sell many. They recently looked at it though and thought it was good enough to create new sports cars in house with the Celica, Supra, MR2, and a new GR86. They also created a new sports cars platforms platform that pivoted into the Lexus prototype driving around. So that’s about 3 different platforms they’re coming up with.

They actually look at profits and competition. If you don't think the number one selling sports car sees that Dodge is bringing back the v8, you're crazy.

Why on earth do you think the number one selling sports car can't survive, but the 20 below it can.
Your thinking with your heart and not your head. And that‘s OK, I get it. No one is saying the Mustang is going anywhere. It’s the form that counts. What does the Mustang have that none of the competitors have? Right, a V8. The V8 will continue for the foreseeable future in the S650 but do you really think a complete new generation would have one. Very unlikely. Now could we have two Mustangs, a S650 refresh and a mid engine I4 or V6 with AWD. Now that could be interesting.

By the way, if in fact the Mustang is profitable it’s because the price keeps going up and the content keeps going down. I do not foresee that changing, ever. And people don’t stop bitching about it.

I promise you the next gen Mustang will in fact have a v8 option. No question about it.

I agree with all of this, except the V8 part.

Managing and Corvette are the only sports cars with their own factory...

Also, if not for the mustang, Ford won't be able to compete in all the racing events that they do
They can certainly quit making the Mustang and still do NASCAR.

I wouldn't be surprised if NASCAR switched to SUV/CUV's

Chevrolet still runs the Camaro every Sunday

plus they can just stick some other name on the car. They used to run a Taurus....

And other races....Ford SuperVan anyone?

Obviously there is no way to know this but reasonable thinking would say this is not really possible. Ford is telling us what we want to hear. That the V8 will continue as long as possible. If they can keep the S650 going I believe it. But if there is to be a Gen 8 it most likely hybird or even possibly a pure EV. If a hybrid then the V8 will not be in it. Why you ask? Simple, weight and cost. And don’t even think of AWD with a V8.

So out of curiosity, how do you think Toyota is financially justifying doing so many different sports cars and coupes at a time when those segments are in decline? We should study this so other brands can find out how to make it feasible for them as well.
