Hi,

I'm looking for the most suitable synthetic oil and oil filter for my Mustang GT Premium. Could you please suggest the best option? I'm currently considering the following:

  • Oil: Mobil 1™ Extended Performance 5W-30
  • Oil Filter: Mobil 1™ Extended Performance Oil Filter M1-212A
Would appreciate your recommendations.
Thanks in advance!

Best regards,
Subbu

Ford Motorcraft oil filter is the best, believe it or not. Second is purolator.

As for oils, I can't tell you which since tribology is out of my depth, but factory 5w-30 seems to work well in testing, as well as Valvoline. If you want to spend mucho money, Amsoil is very good, but puts a dent in your wallet. It certainly did my older cars well with keeping them clean.

@subbu3677 Unfortunately this is like asking which religion is the “right” one or which is the best brand of beer.

For the average street driven car just about any oil/filter combo that meets the Ford specs will do the job. Probably the most important thing is that you actually service the car regularly.

If you really want to go down the oil rabbit hole, head over to bobistheoilguy.com and check out the forums.

Just to add fuel to the fire, my personal choice is Motorcraft filters and Motorcraft 5w30 full synthetic changed every 5k miles.

My personal preference has always been your exact pick….Mobil 1 Extended Performance Full Synth oil and Mobil 1 filters.

Extended Performance guarantees 1 yr/ 12K miles. I never hit 12K miles in a year, so annual oil changes are a safe bet for me.

This is one of the deepest rabbit holes you can fall down. Ten people will give you ten different recommendations. Personally I use Motorcraft oils and filters. Your ideas about regarding Mobil 1 are fine two. So long as whatever you use meets manufacturers specs you’re good to go.

@subbu3677 ...... this has already been discussed a lot on this forum - but - to repeat. If you are driving your engine hard - lots of high rpm shifting - Mobil 1 would be a good investment. If you are not running the engine hard Ford FULL synthetic is among the best.

For oil, any of the large name, full synthetic oils, 5W-30 should be fine. There are differences from one to another, but if any one of them truly stood out from the others, we would have figured that out by now.

Virtually every filter brand has a line, much like vehicles. At one end, the bargain filter. At the other, the flawless, capable of flying the space shuttle filter. Often, the top one or two from each vendor will be fine. Tear down videos and threads will go into great details.

For both oil and filter, I recommend anyone review their choices from time to time. Materials change, sometimes for the better, sometimes not. Where the filter is made or standards can also become something other than what brought you to that brand in the first place.

Specific to oil, whichever brand you decide, I think it's best to stick with that type for the life of the engine. Yes, you can change over time. But analysis will show the properties of the oil take time to stabilize. For example, in a new engine, it won't be until the third oil change or later when what's in the engine truly represents what's been poured from the jug.

Finally, if you'd like to quantify what you're doing, consider an oil analysis. I've be using Blackstone at each change. Their reports are great and worth keeping as part of the maintenance history of the car.

- Follow the recommended maintenance schedule
- Use parts that meet or exceed the standard
- Document the maintenance being performed (FordPass, CarFax, receipt, photo, log, etc.)
- Enjoy the vehicle. It's made to be driven. But don't abuse it

Previously used 5w30 PUP and FL500s on my 19 with zero issues. Ran E85 for 35k and had 62k on it when it was sold.. 2 Blackstone reports showed normal. Currently on my 24 I’m running Motorcraft FS 5w50 with the whipple and FL500s only because that is what is recommended. I know some S550 FI guys are running 5w40 PUP but I haven’t tried it yet.

Oil?

Any one that meets the spec and viscosity Ford dictates to keep the warranty intact, because if you lunch a motor you can be assured they are going to be sending a sample to Blackstone before dropping 29K of engine into your car

I'm on my 2nd OC and both times PUP with a Motorcraft FL-500S filter. In my 2003 GT I ran Mobil 1 full synthetic and a Mobil 1 filter and the car is at about 240,000 miles with no issues. My son has it. One thing to be aware of is that filter manufacturers change as companies combine and even OEM filters are farmed out to various manufacturers all the time. Consistency and construction is the name of the game. Stick with the top models from the top tier manufacturers, do some basic research and you will be fine. A couple of $$$ saved vs a sick $15k motor is just not worth it IMHO. As others have said, the most important part is to change your oil accordingly.
