Refueling is difficult

I will have to try. Unfortunately, no other gas stations around here have high octane gas (94). All others in my area have just 91...

Yeah I totally get that. I think the key for you is verifying that the car is OK vs a pump issue. If it happens at multiple stations I'd be bringing her back to Ford with some data showing there is an issue.

I normally use self service pumps with no shut off. But I haven't had an issue with those that do.

Hey all.

I have refueled my new Mustang GT three times now. Two of those times it was very difficult. Even when I’m only squeezing slightly it’s still clicks off every a few seconds. I’m not sure if I’m not inserting the pump for enough, or insert to get too far, if I’m doing something else wrong.

And I’m not sure why once it worked fine.

I have been driving and refusing cars for half a century. This is the same gas station that I use for my Audi, so it’s not likely to be the pump.

What am I doing wrong?

These cars have something like a twin saddle tank. if you pump too fast, back pressure prevents the gas from getting to the other side. Then the pump clicks off thinking the tank is full.

If you pump the gas at a slower setting you'll be OK.

Every pump can be different, and weather temp is a factor too.

When this happens, flip the nozzle upside-down and refuel like that. This happens with all cars sometimes.

On my dark horse, I had the same problem. Turn the nozzle to 3 o’clock or 9 o’clock position and it will fill up just fine. At least for mine it did.

I have not yet. Because this station is th only one in the area that has gas higher than 91 octane (94, in this case). But I have been filling up my other cars at this station for years.

Still, it's a go0d suggestion and when I do find one that has the right gas, I will try.

Flipping the nozzle is the solution! I’ve had this problem. Someone in this forum suggested flipping the nozzle 180 degrees. I tried it. PROBLEM SOLVED! Can’t speak to flipping 30 or 90 degrees but I’m gonna try it.

Its almost definitely the pump/nozzle. Ive never had an issue.

You can put 91 in it for one fill up... unless you have a tune that doesn't like that... just to see if it is a problem with the car itself.

JFC: Some of these rude replies... WTF?!?

This is a common fueling problem with the Mustang for literally decades. My 06 would click off while fueling if the nozzle pressure is too high. every station is different, and pressure can differ at every pump.

Holding the nozzle upside down works because I believe it leaves a gap which allows back pressure to escape.

2004-2006 Pontiac GTOs have the same problem. One solution mentioned here was turning the nozzle around so it's sideways or upside down. Mine will click off the nozzle 1-2 gallons short, so I'll just keep pumping the nozzle for a minute or so. I reset the trip computer (which also resets the amount of fuel used) every time I fill up, so I know about how much I can pump in.

Could be wrong. But the stop happens at the pump side of the equation. Car is the tank. Class dismissed.
