Can the S650 10R80 be tuned to skip more gears?

Would double tapping the paddles work?

I feel like this did when I test drove a couple automatic GTs, but if I recall correctly if you got the timing wrong it would shift twice instead of shifting gears.

Is it possible to tune the 10R80 in a 2024 Mustang GT to use fewer gears during normal driving?


I feel like the transmission shifts way too often because of the 10 gears. I’d like it to skip more gears during light/normal throttle, for example something like 1st → 3rd → 5th → 7th → 9th/10th, instead of going through almost every gear.


Under heavier throttle or WOT, I’d still want it to use all 10 gears normally.

I drive 2024 6MT, but I cannot understand Ford putting a 10-speed auto in these cars! These are not a semi for heaven's sake that need to have more gears to match up torque curves over wide range of road use. Just doesn't fit the character of a performance car IMHO. I know those of you that like autos have no choice, but I believe Ford did a disservice to those owners with this transmission.

I have paddles, but I don't like the fact that the car sounds like it only has one gear!

That can be changed in the tune also, The default for the stock tune is for it to hold that gear for 30s after using the paddles, I changed mine to hold for 10s.

I also tried changing the shift scheduling on mine and as the resident tooner sed, That is a rabbitt hole they aren't going to go down, Way too much work to get the 10R to not clunk when skipping those higher gears and then people would be bitching about the harsh shifting.

The thing that annoys me most about the automatic gearbox is that when slowing down gently to between 20-35kmh (lots of speed bumps here) it drops down only to 3rd gear, when ideally you’d want to be pulling away in 2nd, so either you have to intervene with the paddles, or by jabbing or mashing the throttle. This happens in both Sport and Track modes.

If I regularly use the paddle to force it to choose 2nd gear will it “relearn” my habits and change its shifting pattern? Can the learnt behaviour be wiped using FORScan?

Yes you can reset the learning parameters with Forscan. I just leave the learning function disabled on mine, It shifts the same every time without that soft shift like drawn out effect that it did sometimes when the learning function is on. I like the way it drives with it off. But that's just me.

AI suggests it's a simple toggle in the Service Functions tab, is it that straightforward? If not, do you have a guide that you followed to do it?

Yes you can reset the learning parameters with Forscan. I just leave the learning function disabled on mine, It shifts the same every time without that soft shift like drawn out effect that it did sometimes when the learning function is on. I like the way it drives with it off. But that's just me.

Yes it is pretty simple to do. In Forscan there is a tab for the service functions, on there you will see i think it's called TCU or TCM relearn or something. Anyway yes its easy and you don't need to change any code or anything it's a service function so just click it and then it will say to wait 30 seconds then you cycle the ignition. Trust me its easy. You can disable it or there is i think 3 or 2 options that can be set. I set mine to disabled and it stays off. I too was thinking I dont want it learning because I drive hard sometimes and also just chill sometimes. And mine was doing what it supposed to do but when I wanted to get on it or drive harder it was not up to snuff.

Yes i tried reset but ultimately i ended with it disabled. I didn't like the way it was learning if you will. I think it drives much more consistently when disabled. The tranny will shift with full pressure everytime.

Not sure what you guys mean by this, double tapping the paddles will drop two gears, no? What do you mean by shift twice rather than shifting gears - what's the difference?

So i used the stop use option. Thank you for posting the Pic, I didn't remember what it said or looked like. If memory serves the halt option is a temporary option. But I don't remember why you'd want that. Maybe someone who knows more will chime in.

The 10 spds is the reason it's faster than a manual, plus the speed of shifting too.
This is a high revving N/A engine, so peak torque is quite high in the range.

This car sounds stupid if you accelerate and then let off the gas, it sounds like you're still in too high a gear

The reason the car sounds like it only has one gear is because modern automatic transmissions, especially one with multiple gears, is shifting faster than ever before and the availability of ratios keeps the engine in a power producing range rather than dropping the revs below the power band and having to get it back up there.
