From Auto News report on Ford's future plans: https://www.autonews.com/car-concepts/future-product/an-ford-future-product-0824/

Summary of the Mustang relevant portion:

Mustang: Ford CEO Jim Farley is shaping a broader future for the Mustang lineup. One of the first additions will be a budget-friendly EcoBoost version tuned by RTR, the performance brand founded by professional driver Vaughn Gittin Jr.

Dealers have already seen a concept for a four-door fastback nicknamed the “Mach 4,” with the possibility of production around 2028.

The current two-door Mustang will continue spawning new editions, including unique trims such as a “liquid carbon” version of the flagship GTD. A mid-cycle refresh is scheduled for late 2026, with a full redesign targeted for 2029.

While Ford initially considered going all-electric with the next Mustang, the plan has been delayed—meaning traditional gasoline-powered Mustangs will stay in the lineup well into the 2030s.

2028 for the Mach-4...nice to finally have a potential goalpost to work towards.

A Panamera is cool, but it’s no 911. Just sayin’.

And remember, an ICE is technically still an ICE even if you duct tape an electric assist motor to it and add weight, heat, complexity and cost. But in the strictest sense of the word a hybrid breaks no promises.

I wouldn't be mad at a Hybrid. 5.0 V8 with a couple of 100hp electrics for the front wheels.

Nothing real surprising here. Ford has been saying they will keep the V8 well into the future for a while now. A 4-door fastback is a travesty. I don't get the that one at all.

A late '26 mid cycle refresh seems to confirm it will be for '27 cars.

A 4 door "Stang?! WTF?! đŸ˜±

PS: Thanks for the post!
Same thing happened when the Jeep JK 4 door came out in 2007. It too was sacrilege but they sell a lot when compared to the 2 door. I showed a rendering of the 4 door Mustang to my wife when the rumors started. She liked it. She always liked the look of a a Porsche Panamera. So if it keeps the brand alive, why not.

I'll be curious to see how this timeline impacts upcoming product design decisions. If the s650 does indeed sunset in 2029, that means the sedan is gonna come out pretty close to the end of the s650's lifestyle. I feel like if it wears s650 inspired styling, it's gonna look pretty dated by the time it arrives.

Hopefully it's an entirely new design that previews the direction of the coupe, kinda like how some mach-e elements previewed the s650, like the more angled in decklid, and smoother lines.

IMO, It would be great to have AWD with 1-2 electric motors up front with an extra 120 HP while the 5.0 powers the rear wheels... Imagine a 3.1 seconds 0-60!

The only key word reading between the lines is “delayed”

hope they make something that you all want, definitely interesting that they bumped the roadmap back a gen to buy more time/tech development etc.
