Mathing or not, still true.

l checked with my credit union (Navy Federal) today and they are:
4.74% for 60mos.
5.04% for 72mos.
Screenshot_20230822_205835_Chrome Beta.jpg

They also give another 0.25 - 0.50% discount for active duty military and veteran's.

Once I get my VIN, I will get a pre-approved loan and take it with me to the dealer to see if they can beat it. If not, just sign the check and drive off in my new car.

Depends on if you are planning on keeping it for a long time. You want to finance things and then pay them to keep your credit rating up. I was talking to a lady who’s son wanted to buy his first home. He was military and had always paid cash fir everything. So, when he went to buy his home, he didn’t have that kind of money, and couldn’t get a loan as he had NO CREDIT
I was the same way when I was in the miltary. When I retired, (From the military), I had virtually no debt and it took about 5 years to build up enough credit history to get a mortgage. Like you said, the only problem is that you need to have credit in order to get more credit. Not quite fair when starting out. Catch-22.

The flip side is when you pay off debt, you get a significant hit to your score like when paying off a loan. In my example, I had a credit rating in the high 700's. A couple years ago, I paid off my mortgage and all three credit agencies cut my score by ~120 points. In the time since, even by paying double payments on my existing debt, I have only gotten ~60 points back.

Another Catch-22.

Exactly! I suppose when we pay our house off, it will go down too. We could pay it off, but locked in a 2.75, so that would be kind of a bad move

No, retired 23 years ago. Still working at job I took when I left the service.
Have had a NFCU account for almost 40 years. Usually get the best service from them. I get the best rates from them, checking and savings dividends, CD rates and credit card interest, though I tend to pay that off every month.

I have already started making payments on my car (Even though it hasn't even been scheduled to be built yet). I set up an auto-transfer to a high interest savings account equivalent to my anticipated monthly car payment (~$1300 / month). When it comes time to take delivery, that lump sum (Plus interest) will be used to increase my down payment to about 30% of the purchase price, then finance the rest and pay off in 4 years or less.

This will be my retirement present to myself and will be 100% paid off when I retire at 65.

My son was on USS Enterprise. He was in from 1997 until I don’t remember when. He kind of got screwed over in the navy. So he decided to be on leave more than he was supposed to be. He was to be intelligent specialist, but he lost a grandma he was close too, he flunked a test like a day later. he and a girl that also flunked it, studied together. He did better than she did when practicing. . They took the retest, she passed it and he flunked it. They compared tests. She had test they studied for, he had stuff on his they had never even talked about or studied before. That’s when he started having a lot of leave time. 🙄 anyway he ended up being a master helmsman. Luckily he has a job he loves
LOL, autopay is a setting not a loan source, or so I thought. Will check them when the time comes.

I know the feeling. I joined in 1980 and my first 5 years were a bit difficult for me, so I also took a little bit more leave time than I was supposed to. After a job detour, I was lucky and had a couple good Chiefs and Officers that saw something in me that I didn't feel at the time. I managed to get back on track and wound up spending 21 years in. Had some awesome times and some none too pretty, but overall was a good career.

Our son got lucky too and Had someone helping him also, but then that man got transferred or something. Can’t much remember what happened because that was like 27 years ago. I just know when we put him on the plane back to Norfolk then got a letter stating he was AWOL, I called them and said we just put him on the plane a few days ago. He apologized, said he was back(maybe was in the brig )but they had sent out 500 of those letters. I said if you sent out 500, then you’re not doing something right!

Pick a credit card account and add your children as authorized users. Obviously communicate and PARENT them on when they are allowed to use it, but they will enter adulthood with a high 700 credit rating. My 20 and 21 yr olds just opened their first solo accounts with 780 credit ratings.
another method that may help establish credit age is to open a line-of-credit attached to the checking account as overdraft protection. Although, hopefully never used it may get reported and in turn establish age.
