Story from Ford Authority:

S650 FORD MUSTANG SHELBY GT500 COMING IN 2025 AS 2026 MODEL

Following the debut of the all-new, next-generation S650 Ford Mustang this week, it’s clear that the current variants of the long-running pony car – the Mach 1 and Shelby GT500 – will be going away, at least temporarily. As Ford Authority reported earlier today, the GT500 will bow out after the 2022 model year, in fact, while the Mach 1 will live on through the last year of the S550 in 2023. However, sources familiar with the matter have told Ford Authority that the S650 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will debut in 2025 as a 2026 model, which means it won’t be absent from the lineup for too long.

If the S650 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 remains on track for a 2025 release for the 2026 model year, this means that the next-gen variant will arrive earlier for the seventh-generation than the sixth, as the S550 didn’t get a GT500 until the 2020 model year after debuting for 2015.

The S550 Shelby GT500 is equipped with the supercharged Ford 5.2L V8 Predator engine, which cranks out 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated exclusively to Ford’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and is equipped with a host of suspension upgrades and aero modifications that help it live up to its billing as the ultimate version of the current-gen Mustang.

Meanwhile, the regular 2024 Ford Mustang will continue to be offered with enhanced versions of the existing Ford 2.3L I-4 EcoBoost and Ford 5.0L V8 Coyote powerplant. While the EcoBoost will no longer be available with a six-speed manual transmission, the Coyote will continue to be offered with both the manual and the Ford 10-speed automatic gearbox, which is now the only option for base four-cylinder models.

Finally, the Mustang Dark Horse was also unveiled alongside the regular versions of the pony car packing a fortified version of the Coyote V8 that’s projected to produce 500 horsepower and is mated to a Tremec six-speed manual transmission. The Dark Horse will also be available in two track-only variants and is the basis for a big motorsports push consisting of multiple new Mustang racers, one of which will compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

That is somewhat disappointing to me, as I was hoping to buy a model between the Dark Horse and the GT500. This makes it sound like the Dark Horse took the place of the Mach 1/Bullitt and the GT350, which makes sense I suppose. I don't think I can wait 3 years for the GT500 though, I want something much sooner.

1) I thought Ford Authority weren’t all that reliable?

2) If true, just because the GT500 is being announced next doesn’t mean there still won’t be other, “in between” models later on. The GT500 was announced very early in the S197 era, and although it got tweaked periodically, we saw the Bullitt and Boss 302 models come out later.

I should have fully qualified my statement with "If this is accurate". I know it is all specualtion and rumor. If it is true though, doesn't leave much time to announce another model between the DH and the GT500. Late 2025 release means early 2025 announcement/reveal. I suppose they could pull something off within 2024, but that is a lot of new models to launch in 2 years.

There has very rarely ever been a model BETWEEN the "special trim GT" and the SVT/Shelby offering. The only time this happened recently was during the Bullitt and GT350, mostly because the Bullitt didn't have PPL2 as an option and the 50th anniversary of the movie was hard to pass up for marketing. Now that Mach1/DH are mostly "GT350 with a little less HP" Unless they come out with a 5.4L N/A GT350 we likely wont see that happen again.

Yes but my point is they don’t have to announce models between the GT/DH and Shelby in the next few years. It can happen well after the GT500

I understand, my point is I want something much sooner, so it appears I have to get a used GT350 or GT500, or settle for a DH. I was just hoping for a third option sooner than later.

VERY interesting if true. But, with Predator presumably gone (so they say), what the hell are they going to use for an S650 GT500?

This is all speculation of course. But, don't expect Ford to follow the same script with this generation. 4 levels of performance is enough IMO. Not to mention the performance packages. The S550 had what? 5 levels plus the various performance packages. Sadly once you go Shelby you never go back, so I'm holding out for a twin turbo Coyote or Predator halo Mustang. What they decide to name it is irrelevant to me.

I'm hoping for a twin turbo coyote for the GT500. I'm sure it will be forced induced.

Just curious, what makes you think that?

They rarely state things as fact on their own, rather they quote sources who have told them things that they believe to be true. These things could turn out to be accurate or not but they aren’t stated as fact, only attribution. I don’t know how you get more “reliable” than that.

“Shelby Mustangs” will be developed and produced as completely separate models going forward.

In fact, once the 8th Gen Mustang’s are unveiled and go FULL EV, the Shelby GT350 and GT500’s may continue to use and sell specialty Gas Engine motors beyond 2030. This is done specifically to fulfill their Motorsport obligation for production cars and competition.

Why would Ford suddenly develop a dual throttle body for an outgoing product? If not specifically developed for a TWIN TURBO to optimize delivery for each cylinder bank… 😉

An issue that arose with the Shelby Code Red was it’s single throttle body. On 93octane, it makes just over 1000hp… as many of you know, the 5.2 without Direct Injection can easily reach those figures with some juice.

The issues have always been AIR!!! Not gas… The 500 (and 350) needs more air and we are about to see that!!!

PLEASE!!! Let thePill see his GT500KR! Let’s go out with a bang!!!

We can stay on 107” wheelbase, just put that Twin Turbo to work!!!

I didn't know that Mach 1 is staying for 2023. A few sources previously stated that it's going out with 2022.

Finally the "Hand Grenade" no longer dominates the view. Looks to be easier to replace or camouflage too. Why not come up with an Aluminator 52XS using its Twin Throttle Bodies with a Modified (Twin Turbo) 350 Intake Manifold instead of the CobraJet Intake. Turbo or not, it should provide at least 550 to 600 HP.
