Not accurate, I think, when it comes to what Ford has said (Bill Ford, David Pericak, Darren Palmer ...). The Mach-E is a Mustang that adds another horse to the stable of Mustangs. So the Mustang brand is extended with a Mustang which has a different powertrain.
Apparently it was Jim Farley who suggested that it be a Mustang after another Jim, surnamed Hackett - who was CEO at the time - put what was going to be a compliance BEV, on hold.
