And a tuned ecoboost couldn't beat a tuned 400Z. Its not that the Z is a bad car, its that the market is ever shrinking and the Z offers nothing to differentiate itself from the competition.

The mustang has a V8, the GR86 and Miata have a low-tech and nanny experience alongside a low entry price, and both the supra and their BMW counterparts have performance.

The Z is far too compromised for most people to buy, that's just the reality.

And if we want to leverage that Z cars used to be faster than corvettes, I specifically remember that the Z32 was considered a pig due to its high weight. It was also very expensive, and certainly not faster than the ZR1, which cost about the same.

If anything, the new Z is just carrying the torch of the original 240/60/80 and 350/370, and its doing a fine job of it, albeit in an ever shrinking enviroment.
It's wild how they went from selling hundreds of thousands of z cars to men who would tune and race them, to selling a just a few thousand, mostly to female real estate agents.

Its a sad thought.

The Z32 is also an unbelievably sexy car. Those headlights are so aggressive

It is very sad. I have owned many Nissans, mostly SUVs, and I think they make a very good vehicle. My 350Z was a great car except for the tire feathering but Nissan screwed the pooch on the new Z! Glenn

My last was a 2010 frontier and it was a sad little truck. Very low tech, very unremarkable in every aspect. I did have an 83 280z back in the day and I loved that thing.

My sad little vehicle was a 1970 Ford Torino Broughm. Great concept and some nice technology but mechanically it sucked big time. It was so bad I didn't buy another Ford for 51 years. Thank God I waited for my 24 Stang Vert!

I've seen a couple threads about how "bad" the s650 sales are but don't think I've seen a single new Z on the road. It has to be a complete failure for Nissan. Right?
To sum it up, shortly and quickly, Nissan is a complete failure. Look at all of their different vehicles and their faults and lack of reliability. Nissan, itself, is a failure so there is no valid comparison. The Z car has not been well received, so it adds to the failure of Nissan.

Its not a complete failure, but Nissan isn’t selling many at all. Some dealers are taking enough off the MSRP to put them in the same price bracket as a new Miata
Not around us. Even if you get to invoice, the Z is running GT Premium and up.

its not even comparable, tbh. Modern turbos are soooo much quicker to spool.

but imo, if I want a turbo car, its a sedan with a fuckoff caterpillar turbo that takes two business days to spool, and sends the car to a different dimension once it does.

turbo’s are for highway sailing, imo. In the twisties, i can’t stand their characteristics, no matter how good.
Its truly all personal preference though. Not knocking on anyone if they do like em.
Turbos really aren't great for highway either. Unless you're running at low RPM, the entire reason for the turbo is better mileage with less displacement. Turbos usually lose any MPG benefit when pushed hard. It's mostly a way around government mileage ratings. Turbos look great under the typical testing conditions, but real life they are at best a break even.

For me, forced induction is what you do after you've given adequate engine displacement and want more power, not an excuse to shrink the engine then try to get back where you started.

Oh, I assure you the turbo would only be there to scare me. MPG's be damned, I want my boost to come on late and hard.

I fully agree that turbos on small engines to bring the power up is silly, and I am not a fan. I will always prefer a well tuned N/A engine for backroads, around town, etc.

Would it be a hot take to say that in all my experience test driving GTs, I find it easier to drive around the city than my EcoBoost?

Turbos exist to meet EPA emissions standards which certain engines with turbos do adequately. But, there are sacrifices such as reliability, engine and turbo longevity, engine oil life, and a real life increase in gas mileage. Once a turbo passes emissions standards and are put on the road, they don't perform well, ALL things considered. In other words, they work to increase HP from a small displacement engine.......for a while.

Look how bad the 3.5 EcoBoost out-tows the Coyote. It's all about that low end power.

Put the Miata or 86 on a twisty road and they're anything but nannymobiles. They just not sprinters.
