It's wild how they went from selling hundreds of thousands of z cars to men who would tune and race them, to selling a just a few thousand, mostly to female real estate agents. And a tuned ecoboost couldn't beat a tuned 400Z. Its not that the Z is a bad car, its that the market is ever shrinking and the Z offers nothing to differentiate itself from the competition.
The mustang has a V8, the GR86 and Miata have a low-tech and nanny experience alongside a low entry price, and both the supra and their BMW counterparts have performance.
The Z is far too compromised for most people to buy, that's just the reality.
And if we want to leverage that Z cars used to be faster than corvettes, I specifically remember that the Z32 was considered a pig due to its high weight. It was also very expensive, and certainly not faster than the ZR1, which cost about the same.
If anything, the new Z is just carrying the torch of the original 240/60/80 and 350/370, and its doing a fine job of it, albeit in an ever shrinking enviroment.
