I'm pretty sure this is the system that made its debut on the 24 Lincoln Nautilus. We have one. It is the most buggy APIM you could ever own. Multiple firmware updates haven't fixed it for many and continual soft resets are necessary because it constantly locks up and losses functionality in one way or another. Be careful of what you wish for. It is a total mess.... Check the Lincoln Nautilus groups and forums for some light reading.

This is why CarPlay is such a wonderful thing. It doesn’t matter if the head units tech is wildly out of date so long as the touch screen works. Any time you upgrade your phone, you get a better infotainment experience.

Back in 2020 or somewhat earlier Ford announced that from 2022 (could've been a slightly different year but I think it was 22) onwards all cars/trucks will be equipped with Android Automotive. However, Google had to delay it and so the back then new F150 and later the S650 were both released with sync 4 instead of AA.
Android Automotive is not backwards compatible and requires new hardware/an entirely different implementation. It should offer much more than any form of sync and work much smoother but early version might have their issues.

Ford will most likely implement it with the first refresh, probably in 2026 as MY 27.

This is the system that's in the Lincoln Nautilus since 24. It is in no way smoother. We have to do a soft reset at least once a week and others have to do it much more often. Some have it so bad that they loose their profile settings after a reset. AND you have to have a google profile setup to use it. It's a real cluster. Android auto is stable as hell. What Ford skinned over the top of it is the issue. I'm sure it will sort out over time but as of now it's far from ready for prime time.

does this mean Ford is giving up on their own navigation system and admitting defeat because many of us are using one of the 2 Google products (WAZE or MAPS) via Android Auto rather than the Ford onboard nav system

Yes, it's Google Nav. Still subscription based after a period of time though.

When I was last at the dealership a week or two ago for something unrelated to the infotainment system, my service advisor asked me about my experience with the center screen and said they’re expecting a recall to eventually come out for it. Speculation for sure, but I wonder, if that does happen, would we have that installed in place of the sync system?

It seems incredibly unlikely that they would significantly upgrade the hardware in vehicles already manufactured. It would be fantastic if they did though. My center screen has to be restarted about once every 3 days as it won’t respond to touch inputs until I reboot it.

Is it possible to put a third screen in the Mustang. I really don't need a glovebox. Or could Ford put a refrigerator and an air fryer in the dash?
I thought the idea of owning a Mustang was the driving experience rather than playing games on the dash. I just wish we had more distracted driving. Pennsylvania just outlawed talking on the cell phone while driving. Now the phone is on the dash...lovely!
