You need a new lip too.

In some states, comprehensive claims don't increase rates. If you pay out of pocket, that might be $5K+ (hood, bumper--Ford's position is bumpers cannot be repaired, lip, repaint--most likely don't need blend if repainting hood + bumper, since the fenders are on a different visual plane. Also the body shop may say they need to re-calibrate the front sensors just from removing the bumper--I don't think this is actually required).

On a prior '25 GT I got a dent/wrinkle in a fender that could have been PDR'd if not for some visible paint transfer onto the other car (they were passing me on the shoulder and scraped me). Initial estimate >$6K just for that fender. That doesn't even include the "supplements" (when body shops ask insurance for more money), likely at the end of the day they woulda blown that bill up to $10K, as many body shops ask for multiple supplements.

Cars are 4,000 pound hunks of steel that go 80+MPH everyday, but they also have to float through the universe without touching anything like fragile soda cans. God forbid something touches your car--BAM, instant multi-thousand dollar loss. It's ridiculous, I expect car makers to come up with better materials technology by now

Going with insurance (though I'd hate to do it) would be the less headache for me. Dropping off/picking up from a body shop is just way less hassle than any other way... Unless I could order the parts already painted.

Edit: I got hit by a flying shopping cart.
* Your Dark Horse deserves to be returned to the condition prior to being hit by the shopping cart. It will or should bug you to no end if not completely repaired.

* Insurance claim vs. out of pocket is a personal decision.

* The damage is pretty significant for a shopping cart impact. The repair cost will add up quickly. New or used hood (likely used if insurance route), new DH front bumper cover (yes, the damage at the top requires full replacement) new splitter. Labor, shop supplies, paint, prep, and paint time add up. The cost to repair could easily exceed $3,000 - $4,000. Are there any scratches to the drivers headlight assembly caused by the cart? If yes, add another $1,500 + to the above.

* If self performing the out of pocket route may be an option if you're willing invest 30+ hours of your own time. This includes sourcing parts, disassembly, delivery parts to a body shop for paint, pickup and reassembly etc.

Damn errant shopping carts!!

FYI - You're odds of getting hit by a GREEN school bus are higher than proving H.D.'s negligence contributed to the errant, wind driven, shopping cart impact/damage to your DH.

Strikes below are against proving negligence.

1. Most and likely all H.D. have cart corrals (strike 1).
2. Most and likely all H.D. have cart attendant's (strike 2).
3. The errant, non corralled cart was likely a result of a lazy customer (potential strike 3).
4. A storm with high winds would likely be considered and "Act of God" which is strike 3 if #3 above cannot be proven.

I hope everything works out for you whichever route you go......

Jesus christ did that cart get shot out off a cannon straight at your car? Thats nuts.

Use your insurance and get it fixed professionally. Thats what its for. Just keep in mind thats also going on your Carfax. Document everything and it'll be in the rear view mirror soon enough. Sorry that happened.

Never park on a downhill slope from the trolley corral.
Who said he didn't? Besides people are way too lazy to return their carts anyway.

I'd get depressed seeing that everyday. Needs fixing.
He never said he wasn't going to fix it. The question was insurance or out of pocket.
