How long do you think the S650 will stay in production?

How long will the S650 be produced?

Question? Do the current level of sales offer any encouragement for a totally new generation? What would Ford’s sales expectations be to fund a new chassis? And if they did would it just be another rear wheel drive car with two doors and an ICE V8? Does that really make sense in the real world? Wouldn’t you love to be a fly on the wall in a Mustang development meeting?
Its the highest selling sports car, so if any sports car can afford to fund a new chassis/platform, it's the mustang. 👍🏻 It doesn't have to sell like an F150 to be profitable. Also, if not for the mustang, Ford won't be able to compete in all the racing events that they do, which is also good press for them.

I could only imagine. They would be skeptical, but some would say the Mustang is still outselling other sports coupes by a decent margin, some would say a new chassis would spark more interest, etc.

Pretty much what 1987 said above

No single car will ever sell enough to justify its own platform (exotica apart) - they simply cost too much

Simple answer - No! Not by miles.

That's a bit misleading though. The segment is shrinking and overall Mustang sales are way down compared to historical norms. I can't imagine the business model for a new platform is only 5 years of production before a redesign is justified under those conditions.

Its the same platform/chassis since 2013.

Its the highest selling sports car and it's not really close. It'll be okay, and if it's not, then no other sports car is okay lol

Yeah but they also outsell those cars by a good amount while being down. I always think it’s crazy how Mustang is down on sales, yet the Supra in 24 sold 2,600 cars.

Even outsold much cheaper coupes.

Bean counters do not look at a top ten list, they look at sales numbers. Popularity against other cars means absolutely nothing if unit sales numbers aren’t there. And maybe you missed it but Mustang’s two biggest V8 competitors no longer exist.

Only Ford knows what “a good amount” is. Right now the S650 on exists because of the things. 1. F series trucks, that where all the profit is. 2. The Mach-E, like it or not it promotes the Mustang name and 3. Racing, it’s great PR. Could these three things allow Ford to make an 8th? Only Ford knows.

They actually look at profits and competition. If you don't think the number one selling sports car sees that Dodge is bringing back the v8, you're crazy.

Why on earth do you think the number one selling sports car can't survive, but the 20 below it can.

Exactly. A mustang down year is twice as good as the next best, while being on a platform thats over a decade old.

That’s what I’m curious about honestly, just because in other worlds that small amount of sales was just enough to justify new platforms. For example Supra and GR86 are drops in the bucket in sales comparably, they were collaboration cars for that reason, but now they’re developing/developed 3 new sports car platforms.

Obviously it’s Toyota and they sell so many other cars, but it’s something that is really interesting to me. You could say the same for Corvette/Chevy too.

I just want to be a fly on the wall in that Ford meeting. Lol

Yeah it’s crazy to me. Yet these other manufacturers see those small sales and still develop new platforms. I just want to know the thought process behind it all.

But other than exotica which sportscars have a unique platform?

Even Porsche share platforms for their cars. (911 sales are very close in number to the Mustang globally)
