Many of us have wondered about thin oils in engines for example 5W20 and below. I think Ford was right go to 5W30 in our engines.
BUT, there’s now other manufacturers now promoting new thinner oils in their engines: 0W8… good grief. Maybe just use mineral spirits… or water… 😵💫
The only place to get this new oil is at the dealer for $20 a litre. This is bordering on a scam.
Thoughts?

I was surprised to see same in the shops last week: 0W8. "fuel efficient".

Some models mentioned in the following article.

https://www.eneos.us/blog/0w-8-motor-oil-vehicle-models-include-toyota-and-mazda/#:~:text=Yaris Cross 1.5 Hybrid AWD,AWD Hybrid (2023 and newer)

Most of those listed are hybrids. My initial thought is these vehicles will operate primarily on the battery or under reduced load, the ICE not needing additional load protection. Not in every instance, but the engine will be charging the battery, not propelling the vehicle.

Yes, my wife’s car is a Toyota due for return this month so we were looking at a replacement and when I opened the hood I saw the 0W8 and asked questions. When they told me yup… 0W8 and the price I told her this isn’t happening, go pick something else.

Yeah, my 2022 wrx used 0w20, and that is not na, kinda crazy. Previous years used 5w30. If you use a different weight do they bang you on a warranty claim?

You best believe it would void your warranty

Oil tech has improved greatly over the years, but 0W8 sounds kinda sketchy. My 392 Dodge uses 0W40 and many, many users are seeing 200K miles with this oil.

My s550 and F150, both 5.0 use 5w20. Since my 2024 is 5w30, i am going to start using 5w30 in those two as well.

are there documented cases where a ford dealer denied warranty on an engine failure because of the oil? And the oil wasn't something ridiculous like straight 50 weight

I am trying to understand why Ford did this. I traded my 2022 6 speed manual Ecoboost Mustang for the 2024 6 speed manual Coyote and it too called for the same WSS-M2C961-A1 spec because "it can reduce oil derived low speed pre-ignition," which apparently is a big concern with GDI Turbo engines. So while it's not only 5W-30, I believe this oil spec has reduced calcium as part of its additive package to reduce this "LSPI" problem.
