Warm my engine a bit, film the filter gasket, and pre fill the filter.

I do it after driving , and cooled down a little. Or warmed up a bit. Never cold. Always oiled gasket. Never prefilled a filter.

Warm oil.
Dab of oil around the gasket.
Prefilling the filter can't hurt - I've always done it as long as the filter can stay upright during the install.
