Smaller, Lighter Mustang?

Should Ford make a smaller, lighter, more sporty version of the Mustang?

  • Yes! Take my money!

  • That'd be cool but not for me.

  • Heresy! You should be stoned for even thinking of such a thing!

Since it seems Ford is toying with the idea of expanding the Mustang brand (Mach E, hybrid, four door, etc) who would be interested to see a smaller, much lighter, more "sports car" than "grand touring" Mustang? I know where I stand but I'm curious if I'm in the minority or not.

I would like to see Ford produce a Mustang on the order of a Mazda Miata. I looked at a Mazda Miata hardtop in Desert Sand at a dealership--there is a lot to like about such a car. However, money is probably the reason Ford will not produce such a product. Although the Ford ICE operations are profitable, the Ford e-Division is bleeding red ink. Ford has to pour the money from ICE to Ford-E to keep the EV development afloat. That doesn't leave much room for expanding the ICE lineup.

Just my two-cents worth.

I just want someone to make a small, light, still fast, affordable sports car.
Mustang = too heavy
Camaro = too heavy
Challenger = way too heavy
Corvette = little expensive and still on the heavier side
Supra = also a little expensive and a little heavy
400Z = little on the heavy side
Cayman = too expensive
BRZ = too slow
Miata = too slow

If someone made a 2 door, RWD Civic Type R, I'd buy that in a heart beat.
3200 lbs, 320 hp, $40-$50k 👌

So you're shopping for a C6 Z06. Clean examples can be found right in your price range. I recommend CorvetteForum for shopping

I've always kind of wanted a more affordable Ford GT that could more directly compete with the 2 seat Corvette.

Yes, lol!
Though being able to buy one new would be ideal.

The problem is with all the laws, back up cams, reinforcing doors, roofs by law, just endless BS is forced into the cars now a days.

a Mclaren 570s is gonna be about perfect for what you’re looking for though, you could even go with the newer Mclaren GT for a little more.

its a dillema that cant be solved easiley:
you want light and powerful? it aint going to be cheap
you want cheap and powerful? it aint going to be light
you want cheap and light? it aint going to be powerful
It's definitely doable.
Take the Supra and give it a cheaper interior.
Take the Civic Type R, chop two doors off and make it RWD.
Take the BRZ, give it a turbo and beef up the drivetrain a tad.

I actually had a very similar thread awhile ago. Basically, the idea I came up with was creating a more practical, and affordable mustang offering that was compelling, but didn't step on the toes of the s650.

The idea I came up with was a smaller hatchback style mustang styled after the fox body to cash in on this wave of 80s nostalgia
Like the official design sketch below. Make it c2 based, use a rear biased AWD system and the 2.0/2.3 Ecoboost powertrains. All of a sudden, you don't just have a lighter and smaller sports car, you have an reasonable hatchback that appeals to non car people as well.

A 2 door version of the new RS3! But, audi be audi, and it would still be a high price point lol.

Make a 2 seater mid engine mustang. Complete with the corvette without touching the ford GT exclusivity. It would be killer.

GM tried this once with the Pontiac Solstice, and it failed spectacularly.

The reality is, Americans want vehicles with a decent amount of space. So they wouldn't be able to sell nearly enough of these to justify the costs.

Toyota can get away with building the Supra, in part, because they don't have unions weighing them down and because it outsources much of the engineering/assembly to a 3rd party. But even then, it was discontinued for a long time and they just brought it back recently. A lot of the same applies for the Subaru BRZ (they were able to share costs with Toyota).

Part of the reason the Mustang lives on despite being relatively low volume is because the tooling/architecture is already paid for.
