S650 Mustang Replaced my differential fluid at 15k miles, definitely think it is good practice to do so. IMG_7007

So recently I decided it would be good to replace the differential and transmission fluid in my car just to get all of the break in stuff out of them. A little bit excessive? Maybe, but I like taking care of my cars. I replaced with BG ultra guard LS from op mustang. Great kit with very detailed instructions. The magnet pictured above is on the fill plug and the drain plug on the bottom had about 2x as much. As you can see, a lot of debris for only 15k. The fluid was also black.

This was a very easy job. The only thing I’d say it would be good to pay attention to is to ensure that the car is as close to level as possible so that you get the fill level right. Capacity is 1.6qts but the kit comes with a little fill indicator as the spec is about 9mm below the fill port.

Do you have the PP torsen diff or the standard limited slip diff?

I’ll be changing mine out soon at 15k as well and I’m curious if there’s a difference in break in wear.

You had me till you said you used BG. After working for Ford as a diesel rep and at a dealer as a parts manager their products are just for making gross. Inexpensive products some for a premium plus service to unknowing owners. Brake flushes, injector flushes, EGR cleaning, premium fuel filter service, and etc.. Typically BG products are sold to people that don’t do their maintenance. In some of the products they put high mileage additives in it that swell seals and such. I don’t know anything about the specific product you used, just the general overview of BG usage from a dealer prospective.

I agree probably a good idea. BMW with its M cars change out the engine oil and diffy fluid after 1200 miles. In fact if you don't do it, your warranty on those items can be shit canned.

Yikes, I'm at 30k miles and haven't changed the diff fluid. Taking it in to the dealer for the 30k miles service, will make sure they change the fluid as part of their service. (I hope it is standard procedure).

According to Ford, the diff fluid doesn't need to be changed until 150K miles (at least on Ecoboosts).

Just doesn't sound reasonable, but that's what they say. What gives? Any experts want to chime in?

Great practice to keep up with maintenance. Since normal maintenance interval is at 150,000 miles for differential fluid and you did at 15,000, I assume you drive the car hard as in truck racing. You did not mentioned if you used the friction modifier additive. Does the BG ultra guard already come with it?

Yes I tend to drive the car pretty hard. The friction modifier is already added in since it's the "LS" version of the fluid so no need to add the stuff from Ford.

Very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to share. I also see they have low dust brake pads for the 2024 Mustang GT with the performance package.

172,000 miles on my 07 GT with no differential fluid change. Have never done that on any car and never had a problem.

Doesn’t mean the effectiveness of the limited slip hasn’t decreased due to lack of fluid changes.
