PPF… Yes or No and Why?

Full PPF for my Dark Horse w/HP. I am head over heels for the Blue Ember paint and want to protect it as much as I can.

It'll be my daily driver and track toy until the warranty expires. After that, it transitions to a weekend car, but will probably continue tracking it.

Im having a hard time spending 2K to save a few rock chips on a 5K paint job.

Not saying it's a wrong move. I'm just having a hard time. That's damn near a Cat Back Exhaust.

On a dark horse i would get full ppf
on a gt probably just front half and behind rear tires on the lower rear bumper.
on an ecoboost none

I pass, first off it's a daily driver so it will eventually get pecked. I just put a good ceramic for UV protect, and let the chips fall where they may.

Paint pen if I get something that I can not live with. I always expect it is going to get some battle scars. Plus I rather get a few chips on the paint, than spend $$ on PPF and have it get damaged.

Guess here in AZ their are plenty of competition for PPF. I get xpel as they have to be ceritied. My guy did front clip,A pillars,paratial roof and lower rear infront of back wheels for $800. The front grill takes more that a dozen pieces. Too many places are a rip off.

I pass on it for daily drivers but put full PPF on the exotic toys we have that are not used regularly. My answer will ultimately depend on how you want to use the car.

Interesting take. I kind of see it the other way... the more you drive the more you would likely need the protection. But I get your point... if what is being driven isn't really worth saving then maybe the expense to protect it isn't worth it either.

Then that begs the question of "worth" which can vary greatly.

If you trade in every few years, I personally wouldn’t. I used to go watch cars run through the lanes at the Mannheim auction in PA where every car gets its 60 seconds of fame and the difference in price between a pristine car and one that has no damage history but has average road rash is easily the cost of the ppf. Most used car dealers get their used cars at these auctions and will do their own reconditioning as needed when they get them back to the shop. So if you are doing PPF for resale, I wouldn’t bother, but if you’re doing it for your own peace of mind then whatever the cost is for that peace of mind is up to each individual. My personal feeling is that it’s a Mustang and while they aren’t inexpensive any longer, they’re not a Bugatti either.

After a 5 years my previous car, a BMW 4 series had quite a few chips. I also know where 80% of them came from when some dimehead passed me at about 70 MPH (in a 55) in a center turn lane that had quite a bit of small gravel in it. It was barely over a grand to get the whole front including the hood and fenders cleaned up and repainted by a BMW certified shop and there wasn't a single flaw anywhere else on the car.

I did full ceramic for easier washing but am not interested in PPF. I just don't care for the looks (or frankly the idea) of it.

The summer tires on the GT PP are excellent at grabbing gravel and throwing tiny rocks everywhere. I went with XPEL Fusion PPF, rock guards and Hein's fix for the wheel well opening. I don't have any PPF lines and am happy with the protection. One could argue the price is halfway or more to a paint job, but what protection do you have after it's been repainted?

Like anything else, it's going to come down to your budget and your priorities. I'm satisfied with my choice, and will be doing it again in 2 weeks on my wife's new car.

Would a paint pen be better for dealing with chips then?

In my opinion yes. I've used them for years now on the daily driven mustangs and have gotten pretty good at using them and touching spots up. It takes practice but the pens are super useful.

I just sold a 2018 GT that did not have PPF and had numerous chips in the paint. I sold it for a great price regardless of the imperfections so from that point it's not worht it.

I wne twith PPF this time because those paint chips drovem me crazy every time I saw them.

I went with the Xpel track package PPF plus the rear panel on the trunk and Xpel ceramic over the whole car. I like the protection from small chips and I worry less about putting swirl marks in the paint.

If you have the time and patience there is always the option of doing it yourself.

I did the entire front bumper, head lights, first 3rd of the hood, 2 inches around the wheel wells, front 2 inches of the roof, white strips to left and right of wind shield, mirrors, and door handles (& behind them) for $400.

If you look closely you can see where it ends on the hood. I had to piece things together on the front. I used a paper and pent to draw out the shapes. Then I cut the PPF with scissors.

It's not perfect but I but the price was right for me.

I wish I had those skills and patience, I still need to put replace the stripe on my hood and was thinking of trying it myself but I keep chickening out.
