My 24 S650 GT Premium asked for a SW update when I got home last night. I told it to update now and wwnt inside. This morning, when I finished my 12 minute drive to work, I looked at my oil temp and it was 206, which seemed odd as its usually under 200 for such a shot trip in cool weather. As I sat parked, idling, it climbed slowly to 212. I took a short drive to see what would happen. It climbed to 224 while driving and when I parked again it seems to settle after idling at 217. Before the update it would quickly settle while idling around 195. Coolant temp is normal. Attached picture is after about 10 minutes ofnidle with no hard driving.

Anyone else notice this behavior after a SW update?

Inlet air temp is 118˚ but you say it was a cool morning….maybe the update messed with calibration?
To be fair, that was after a good 10 to 15 minutes of idling.

Just called my Ford dealer and they said unless the temps climb to over 250, they aren't concerned. Said sometimes the sensors will have this issue every once in a while and go away. Suggested I watch it for a week and call back if still concerned.

A good oil is supposed to handle up to 500˚, so I would agree with the dealer that anything under 250˚ is fine. Burn off all that vapor…lol.

Coolant temp would be more important to me than seeing oil temps slightly rising and falling with the drive. I drove watching oil temp gages, and it seemed completely random why it rose and fell in temp.

You need to pay attention to the AC status when looking at oil temps. It makes a big difference in our cars when it on vs off. It's higher when it's off.

The general rule of thumb is that for every 10C increase in oil temp, the oxidation rate doubles.

Just verified the oil level is good. Did do an oil change 1 week ago, using Motorcraft 5W-30 full synthetic, but today after the SW update is the first time seeing this behavior. Oil pressure responds correctly, 100 psi on cold start, 25 on idle, 30 to 70 while driving at different rpms. A few questions:

1) Is there an actual oil temp sensor or is it an algorithm?
2) Is there a dedicated oil thermostat controlling flow to the cooler or just full flow and temp depends on the coolant/radiator?

Ok, but those air inlet temps are what I see this time of year in Phoenix. It couldn't have been a "cool morning". Lol

And why are you letting it idle that long?

I let it idle so long to see if it would cool down. Normally dont do that. I'll keep an eye on the IAT as well. Tbh, it seems normal IATs for long idle, you can see in my pic it was 64F outside.

Idling gets the temps warmer not cooler. You need airflow. 👍🏻

Before this SW update, even a short idle would bring temps down to 195, but I can see what ur saying. I think this is an overall "keep an eye on it" situation.

I prefer oil temps at or a little above 212deg F.
When at 212 deg F or above your motor will evaporate more moisture or unburned fuel in the oil. Too much fuel in your oil is always a bad thing.

Idling senario aside, the oil temps you saw are normal.

As a follow up, while driving home on the highway at 70 mph, 75F ambient, it held solid at 233F which is the first time I have ever seen my oil temp go over 230.
