I never knew this!

I saw on IG this morning where this guy showed that while driving a 7G A10 GT, if you double tap the gas pedal WITHOUT touching the paddles, it drops a few gears where just depressing it once to the same point only drops one gear or no gears. NO PADDLES were touched.

So I took it out today, and just in Drive I lightly double tapped the pedal and sure enough, it dropped a few gears!

To those who knew this...I did a search here and found no talk of this.

To those who might say "big deal, push the pedal down enough and you drop gears anyway"...it's not the same. The double tap drops the gears but the RPM's are lower. It literally drops a few gears without all the pedal travel needed.

(It's like the equivalent feel of blipping the paddle shifter down 3 times but this way, you are still locked in Drive and not Paddle Mode.)

I did try a double tap on the gas pedal a little further and the gear drop was a bit more aggressive. There IS a difference between this and just pushing the pedal down.

At the risk of snarky replies, I felt I had to share this because it's an interesting feature I didn't know about until today.

For those like me who didn't know this...try it and report back. There HAS to be a few of you here who didn't know the A10 did this!

I've seen this on IG as well and didn't believe it. Your post definitely lends some credibility to the claim. I'll try mine next time.

Does the car surge forward any? Or just a 3-gear drop?

Does it show a lower gear on the dash?

The RPMs are lower? What do you mean? Going to lower gears should increase the rpms.

1) It's a real thing! Can confirm! I couldn't believe it myself!

2) It's just a 2-3 gear drop...or more...(depending on how hard you double tap.). No unwanted surge. It drops the gears before the throttle reacts. It's crazy!

3) Driving the A10 in Automatic mode, I don't get a gear display. I only get a gear display when using paddles or in M.

4) RE: RPM's, what I meant was that to drop 3 gears with the gas pedal only, a single press would be further travel resulting in higher RPM's. With the double-tap of the accelerator, you don't have to press as far down to drop the 3 gears, resulting in lower RPM's in comparison to one deep single press.

Ya know...that is quite possible! I would imagine if someone is aggressively feathering the throttle, he's dropping gears and not realizing it!

Do you mean a “Double Press” (lightly) instead of a “Double Tap”?? If so, I stumbled across this some months ago merging on to the Interstate and was caught off guard but then tried it again at a later date and it Is sort of a thing. No Gear indication is shown (unless you set it up using FORScan). For me, during these moments, I also get the loud Pops from the exhaust as I apply pressure to the pedal as it burbles to let me know that it’s READY TO GET UP and GO!! 🤣🤣

Well, yes, "Double Press" would be a more accurate description now that you mention it....

This would be quite useful on a two lane highway when you're going to pass and you want to be down a couple gears and ready as oncoming traffic goes by. I'm going on a road trip tomorrow so I'm going to try this with my Ecoboost without paddles.

Interesting. Think I may have accidentally stumbled on to this once before and thought it was odd behavior at the time but didn't think much of it. I'll be hitting the highway tomorrow and will have to to try this out.

First off, Thank you guys for being cool in this thread! Sometimes I hesitate to post a thread because smart ass comments just wear me down. But a thread search here showed no mention of this feature and I thought it was an interesting feature to share. I would have never known until I saw an IG video showing it. I mean...who double taps the pedal? lol

Ryan: Report back for sure!

Nightmare: It's supposed to work on the Ecoboost, and I read even the Broncos do it. I suspect any Ford Drive-by-wire accelerator with an auto trans possibly does this. Some have said so in IG coments.

Tripower: Report back as well!

Dark-650: That's a great question! It does it in Normal Drive Mode, and I did try it in Track Mode, and I think it worked then too. (I say think, because I only tried it once on the last 1/4 mile before my house.....it seems it should do it in all modes (maybe not slippery?!?) but I also think the pedal tap to shift point changed with the mode change.

My experience was in Custom Mode which is Normal with TC off, and custom exhaust and steering settings.

Looking forward to reading all your feedback after trying this feature! I only tried it on one short trip but was amazed enough to post about it.

Mine’s a manual but this is certainly interesting. How does the car not get confused between wanting to drop gears vs whatever situations that entails throttle double press?
