I'm getting two different stories from two different dealers. One dealer says they can order a Dark Horse premium any time they want to. The other dealer is telling me they have to have an allocation to order. The first dealer I specifically said to them that I thought they needed an allocation to order the Dark Horse and they said they did not. Who is telling the truth?

Not sure but my local dealer said they only get 1 DH allocation per year and still want ADM for a model that's into its 3rd year run. The dealer I ended up buying from had numerous Dark Horses already on the lot and was willing to discount, heavily, even on my Premium.

I've been able to find some on lots, but all the ones I can find are 800-1200 miles away from me. I want a handling package car without a bunch of other options, in red, grabber blue, or adriatic blue. Might consider a vapor blue car or white car, but the rest of the colors don't interest me.

Depending on the deal and how well the car fits the options you are looking for, it might be worth it to pay the shipping costs.

I should also add I want a 6 speed and don't want Recaros, that trims the list down quite a bit

Yes. My story, some of you know it already: I bought the exact 2026 DH I wanted in Florida and I'm based in NY. I managed to get $4k off and shipping enclosed was $2k. Everything was done electronically. So I got the car I wanted for $2k off. Yes, I miss not driving the car out of the dealer's lot. I do. But that's a small price to pay.

OP, check visor.vin to search nationwide.

My closest dealer is higher volume. They had 5 DHP's. 2 '25's and 3 26's at the start of 2026. I purchased in March.. By then they had 1 '25 and 2 '26's. I bought one of the '26's. They had 2 left a month ago. A '25 with HP, and a '26 standard. If they don't have the car you want and can't get one from somewhere close by, they'll order whatever you want. Car, truck, etc.

good thinking. i don't understand alot of the stock order cars out there. i feel like if you spec a premium with recaro seats, you might as well take a few grand out in the yard and burn it.

are DH's going for over sticker?
absolutely not. If a dealer wants over sticker, walk. You should be able to knock a few thousand off MSRP. And aren’t there any incentives on DHs?

One dealer says they can order a Dark Horse premium any time they want to. The other dealer is telling me they have to have an allocation to order.
Both dealers are correct. But I think neither explained themselves well.

A salesperson can place and order for anything, any time. But for that order to be worthwhile, it ultimately needs to be paired with an allocation, a slot on the assembly line. Otherwise, the order languishes and ultimately pages out at the end of the Model Year.

Dealers can work amongst themselves to trade cars, trucks and allocations back-and-forth. Dealers can also work with their regional managers. Some salespeople pursue and come through. Others, the additional time and effort isn't in their or the dealer's interest.

Horse trading amongst dealers can sometimes result in a bit of a premium. That needs to be weighed against the cost of securing something elsewhere and the cost of transporting it back.

People who have purchased from a dealer before or do business with that dealer in some fashion, can sometimes have a bit more pull. Dealers themselves, the ones who sell more Mustangs than others, have more pull than those who sell fewer. But this can present its own problem: having more orders than allocations.

In this market, I would not be paying a premium to secure a specific build. I'd pay list at most. With zero dealer add-ons. If something can be found existing on a dealer lot, I'd expect at least modest discount, a few percentage points, with no add-ons. YMMV.

are DH's going for over sticker?
Pricing can be area specific, but I would say no. Or a vehicle might be listed at a premium, which later evaporates with a serious discussion to buy. Virtually everything is discounted in my area. Sticker price for a few, while the majority of new cars and trucks are being advertised with discounts of a few percent for close to 10% off. '25s can be had for even greater discounts, depending on the model.

I'd pursue any path available. If a dealer would work to secure an allocation, great. Let's see what things price to. While that was going on, I'd be using any of the search engines on a regular basis to see what's available and where. Some have also cold-called more distant dealers to ask about their allocations, securing a sale with them and later picking up or transporting that car back.

Reads like the OP is on their way. Good Luck with the search. :please:

A dealer must have an allocation to place the order against to have Ford pick it for scheduling. Without an allocation or supplemental allocation an order will not be built.
A dealer with an available allocation wins every time.

Dealers need an allocation to order.

Many dealers do get just a single DHP allocation per model year, but those with high sales or who meet other targets get extra allocations as a reward from Ford.

Some dealers also trade allocations with others.

Ordering one and getting the order fulfilled are different things. I suspect any dealer can order one anytime, but without an allocation, Ford will not pick-up the order to fulfill it.

I decided in April that I wanted to order a DHP. I have a positive, 10+ year relationship with a dealership. I have bought MANY cars there - for my wife, kids, other family. The new car manager and I have each other’s cell phone numbers - so suffice it to say it’s a solid relationship. I literally just got a 2026 F-150 King Ranch I ordered through him - entered on January 7, built March 22 and delivered on April 9.

When I called him about the DHP he told me they only had one allocation, and it was already pre-sold. He essentially told me he couldn’t help me on this one - entering an order would be pointless, becasue it would sit there until he had another allocation and he did not know when\if that would come. It is not a big Mustang store - much more F150 driven. He told me I was better off finding a dealership with an allocation and offered to vouch for me to any dealership management team.

I found a dealership about 75 miles from me with an allocation, had my contact vouch for me, and placed an order for the DHP (no ADM, either) on April 21 through that dealership that had an allocation (they only had one).

My spec: https://shop.ford.com/configure/mustang/config/paint/Config[|Ford|Mustang|2026|1|1.|700A.P8R..PNL...COU.85W.67P.18F.61D.MAC.YZTAC.]?intcmp=vhp-seconNav-fbc

I hope that helps…
