So I'm planning on buying a mustang, not immediately, but within the next few years. I wanted your guys feedback on this, what do you think is the better "forever" car, a 2013-14 gt500 or a new 5.0? Normally I would buy something new, I've had too many bad experiences with used cars, but apparently that era of gt500's is rock solid in the reliability department.

I like the styling of the s197 and s650 for different reasons. Clearly if I wanted to buy the gt500, I would have to learn how to drive a manual, which is something I've always wanted to learn anyway. I don't know how beginner friendly the gt500's manual is, so that is something I'd have to research.

But overall, let me know what you guys think. This would be my first sports car. I know both of them are quite powerful, and the kinds of cars you have to be careful with when learning how to drive.

Simple… 13-14 gt500s are still like 50-60k
They make very good power stock and respond well to bolt ons.

cons… you can make significantly MORE reliable power with the coyote over the trinity.
And the 10R80 will DOMINATE a 6 speed gt500.

so if you care about speed… newer 10spd coyote… if you want to spend more money to be slower … but have respect from boomers… the Shelby.

whatever you do don’t get a GT350… that’s the worst of both worlds.

Tough choice but I think it just depends on how you want to use the car.

A 13/14 GT500 is going to be a great weekend toy and probably not lose much of its value since it is a Shelby. At 10 years old it is still depreciating but it is nearing the bottom of what it will probably be in a few years.

The S650 will depreciate quickly but if you want a newer car with a warranty and daily driving comfort, it is probably a better way to go.

Between those two choices only; I would go 13/14 GT500 route.

GT500 all day /every day - for me

But really - the best thing you can do is go drive each one- they are going to drive like VERY different cars - I mean night and day different -

OK sorry to do this.....but while I love the idea of an S650 as a daily and a car I would keep for 5-10 years- and the graphics are really cool today- you realize in 15 years the dash graphics are going to be like ...

Those GT500s are still extremely fast cars. If it's a second car I'd get the GT500. If it's a daily I'd get the S650 and maybe mod it in the future. Like someone else said when you start adding power to an S650 the Coyote with the 10R80 will really lay it down.

Agreed. GT350 all day, every day over 13/14 GT500 or S650... but that wasn't an option OP indicated. I didn't want to be "that guy" to state the obvious choice!! 🤣

I’ve not driven a gt 500 but the s650 is a very comfortable car to drive. It is quick but it will depreciate over time quickly. You are going to be buying a gt 500 for around the price they were new. They aren’t going to lower much more IMO so it’ll hold its value unless you put a lot of miles on it.
As for performance the gt 500 is on top in everything. On a road course it’s really not even close. Now, you are talking a boosted bigger motor vs NA smaller motor. I’d say if it’s a daily driver I’d probably go with the 650. Plus, if you aren’t mechanical you are going to be paying a boatload of money on the gt 500 to have anything worked on by a mechanic.

From what I've seen, most people love how the gt350 drives and sounds. But it seems like the voodoo is a bit... temperamental, and that's what scares a lot of people off. I have thought about one of those as well. Fantastic cars provided they remain reliable.

I’d also check carfax even though it’s not 100% reliable it’ll give you an idea of what’s gone on with the car. We saw a used gt500 that only had 4500 or so miles on it. It had been with 3 owners and had 4 batteries replaced which th a few electrical issues. Obviously an electrical problem that couldn’t be resolved.

Yes... there is actually a thread over on the S550 forums about this now....
The issue with the GT350 is that there were a few issues with the first few years... combined with the fact that there are some rules you need to follow with VooDoos

You can treat a Coyote like a Toyota Camry- and it wont break....if you treat the VooDoo like one...it will break is the best way to summarize

That being said- in 19 and 20 they switched blocks (uses GT500 block) between that and other changes over time- the 19 and 20s are much less temperamental (for example dont burn oil) and .....well if you look at prices - the prices of 19/20s reflect that...

Want to just win drag races?- Coyote all day long - you can supercharge/ build them and they will stay reliable
Want to daily drive something?- I personally went Coyote for my current daily driver and past daily driver...

I think with their manual transmission, the 13/14 GT500s and the GT350s are not numbers cars- they are experience cars ......much like....well here are some examples

I have many friends in the exotic car world ....

2WD Huracans are more sought after then AWD Huracans- the AWD cars are definitely faster -

Manual transmission R8s while slower- are much more sought after then automatics

Manual transmission GT3s - I mean a Turbo S is going to smoke it - but people want manual transmission GT3s for the experience

This is why I would highly suggest driving an S650- a 13/14 GT500 - and throw a GT350 in there as well - along with a Mach 1, Dark Horse, and GT500

I have driven all of them but the Dark Horse - and each one offers its own unique driving experience. They are all really completely different cars.

Every one of us is going to be more attracted to the intrinsic values that ones of these cars offers more then the others ... so in my mind there is no wrong choice

For those that want to argue that one car is better because of pure numbers- I would suggest they visit their local tesla dealership if numbers is all they care about...

It’s really pretty simple. When you wrote this post you were using your head. When the time comes to actually choose your decision will be made with your heart and soul. That’s what Mustangs are all about. 👍

I have the same issue as you- I seem to get the 2 year itch
I'm having a problem finding a car I would want to replace my current car with - that is without spending 150K lol (teen driver and 2 daughters in private school have restricted my budget lol)
