You can buy two jugs of oil at Walmart for $20 each and a filter for $7. $47

What about your Mustang? Everyone here talks about $130 at the dealer
You have to compare the same products with each other to say if going to the dealer for the oil change is worth the price difference and hassle or not.

Pricing dealer oil changes is like pricing insurance quotes. Location, type of oil, amount of oil, specials, etc. I checked my local dealer, and it depends. At one end of the spectrum, $60 for conventional oil in a 4-banger. At the other, a large V8 and full synthetic, $160.00. In another part of the state or another state, it could be the same. Or completely different.

He didn't mention what oil he was using.

You can get Motorcraft oil and filters at Walmart, but I'd save the money and get a full synthetic for less while I'm there. Their branded oil isn't anything special

Good thing we're talking about Mustangs

True. Pricing varies. Right now, I’m willing to pay as much as $100 for the labor at the dealer to keep me from messing with an oil change. It’s worth it to me to save the hassle.

Okay then.

$60 for two jugs of Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum

(You can do Supertech for $40 if you want)

$12 for a Motorcraft filter

Less than half the price

Interesting discussion. Been taking my vehicles to dealer or oil change specialty places for last few years (for reasons already stated). Now my Mustang is Whippled & requires 5w-50 motor oil. So will be changing myself since there is low likelihood anyone but a dealer has this in stock. Even then, how do you really know what oil you are getting in any case? Most shops now just use a hose connected to a remote tank. Ah well, back to crawling under the car & making a mess....

Regardless, it's still worth it to me to save the hassle. Most other automotive work I do myself, thus the reason I installed a lift in my shop, but oil changes are worth the cost for me at this stage in life. Twenty years ago, I was more worried about saving $15 (or $50 bucks); now I'm more worried about saving time and hassle.

All the comments about oil changes make sense, it cost me about $120.00 to buy 10 quarts full synthetic and the filter, 40 more they could have handled it all. I guess my biggest concern about dealer doing it was the tech spilling oil everywhere when the filter was removed. I spent all my time dealing with that.

Agreed.

The UPR drain plug works well for me. Femco drain plugs also get high marks.

For the filter, I do two things: 1) fashion a funnel from cardboard, so the oil drips into that, then down into the tub, 2) place a few old t-shirts in the area, to catch what the funnel doesn't.

Someone made a good point earlier I'm going to try next time, in addition to the above: back the filter off just enough where oil begins to exit. The slow motion will allow the oil to drain down the side of the filter to the corner, then drip. A slower process, but less messy.

Based on previous comments and threads, I'm guestimating most techs get the filter started and then let it rip.

You can also use a small sandwich plastic bag.
Put your hands inside the bag, grab the oilf filter.
Put the oil filter in the bag.
Remove the oil filter while holding it from the plastic bag.
Oil will drip inside the plastic bag.

I do understand the concern. There are two main reasons why I do much of the work on my car myself.

1. I know exactly what has been done, and that everything was done according to manufacturer specs.
2. I can mix and match the parts and materials from different manufacturers based on my preference and what I am trying to accomplish.

When it comes to oil changes, there is some risk that the dealership will mess something up, but I figure those techs are doing hundreds upon hundreds of oil changes on cars like mine, so in most cases they are going to do a decent job.

My local dealer sends a guy to my house to do regular maintenance. I pay and give the guy a tip.

I am a lucky guy that bought the fastest 6-Gen Mustang. It will do a faster lap than the 7-Gen cars.

I wish that Ford would stop wasting money (billions of dollars) on EV cars that don't sell.

Please just give us a 7-Gen Mustang that is faster than the 6-Gen Mustang.
