UPDATE: Our sources tell us that this mule is the street version of the upcoming Mustang GT3, which Jim Farley teased here.
We just got our first physical evidence that Ford is working on the next level of performance for the Mustang S650, with these shots of a disguised Mustang prototype showing performance upgrades—including a new center-exit exhaust layout.
The disguised Mustang coupe uses the S650 body, with a wing and modifications to the rear deck, along with a camouflaged front-fascia hiding what appears to be a more aggressive grille. The basis for this coupe’s front-fascia appears to be based on the Mustang Dark Horse.
Rumors have swirled that the Shelby GT500 prototypes have begun testing, but the prototype in these photos do not align with expectations for the next GT500, leading us to believe this may be another high performance variant in the works here.
The rear view reveals the most interesting detail with the revised bumper and a center-exit exhaust (hidden behind a wire mesh cage) clearly jutting out from the rear bumper. The outboard placement of the S650’s exhaust tips have been covered over.
This prototype is riding on Pirelli PZero tires, size at 275/40 R19 on the rear, with 255/40/R19s on the front wheels. The car sounded very aggressive, but we couldn’t make out specific noises to make any firm claims on the engine under the hood.
