Does anyone actually know where it hits limp mode? Has anyone had it happen?
Limp mode due to oil temp is theoretical at this point. Ive only heard of it happening to one person who was doing several wide open pulls in quick succession without cooling in between. More than likey it was due to coolant temperature or something else.

because my son is a certified ford tech and says that Ford ECUs will absolutely do this - and even chat GPT says it, and includes sources such as DTcodes.com

not trying to argue with anybody but you’re opinion is just that- and the whole point of a forum is an exchange or ideas

Where is your proof it doesn’t outside of anectodral ?


1. Ford PCM uses oil temp for protection (real, documented behavior)


From Ford diagnostic logic (OBD / service-level documentation):


  • The PCM uses oil temperature input to:
    • Adjust cam timing (VCT)
    • Track oil degradation
    • And critically:
    • “initiate a soft engine shutdown
 reducing power by disabling cylinders”

👉 This is the closest thing to “official” wording you’ll find without a paid Ford workshop manual.


What this proves:


  • Oil temp (real or modeled) can directly trigger power reduction / limp-like behavior in Ford systems.

The result is wrong in this case. There is no limp mode at 280° inferred oil temperature reading.
Thats not under dispute. The point is Ford DOES NOT program the car to go into limp mode @ 280⁰. Its a myth that was started by one poster on the internet, and is being repeated despite it not being true.
Does anyone actually know where it hits limp mode? Has anyone had it happen?
So let's look at some actual evidence vs AI babble

There are documented cases of S550 cars going into limp mode because of oil temperatures that go "into the red" on the gauge.

What does "limp mode" mean? RPM limit of 6,000

What temperature is 'the red'? See below.

Can someone reproduce this on an S650?

How to fix this? Add an oil cooler of course.

krisk recorded his oil temperature as displayed on the dash.

The temperature was higher than 280.

His car was not in limp mode.

He posted about it in this thread, complete with the inferred oil temperature reading.

Is there some limp mode tied to oil temperature (inferred) in the S650 at some higher inferred oil temperature than even krisk ran his car up to? I don't know. It is, however, false to say that it is 280, and we have a forum member here who personally did it and posted here about it. That puts it to bed.

Also, if somebody has a car go into limp mode, you need some evidence of what caused it. The limp mode may not be tied to inferred oil temperature at all.

The car will pull power long before any limp mode activates, though.

Now here is a more serious question: Have any of you posting so insistently about limp mode ever had your car go into limp mode?

At the track however our base GT (that lacks a bumper mounted oil cooler like the darkhorse) overheated instantly on every lap. The Track is about 2 mins long, each session the car started the lap at normal operating temp and about 3/4 lap oil temp was in the red and the car is limited to 4500rpm (and possibly other ecu limiters).

Let me be clear that I am not saying it was not. It may have been. We just do not know from that thread. I did ask MMR for an update to that thread in January (see final post), but nothing.

Plenty of folks have stated that installing an oil cooler does not change the inferred oil temperature (even though it does change the actual oil temperature). Accordingly, if the inferred oil temperature is the trigger for the 4500 rpm limit, then installing an oil cooler would not help, even if it kept the oil cooler.

Also, "in the red?" Do the regular GT Mustangs not give an actual number?

I ld bet that posters limp mode experience was due to something else.

Yes they have the same numbers. But you have to look at the guage to infer the limits. This is the oil temp gauge on my track app. It doesnt have numbers but I've e been able to figure out that the yellow mark is 280⁰. This was at a temp of 210⁰.

According to the internet, you could go into limp mode from:

CHT temps
oil temps
rear differential temps
automatic transmission temps

The more pointed question I think we can all agree on is why the heck are things like Oil temp INFERRED vs actual? I don’t understand enough about the technical parts of all of this to begin to comprehend why they did this.

The more pointed question I think we can all agree on is why the heck are things like Oil temp INFERRED vs actual? I don’t understand enough about the technical parts of all of this to begin to comprehend why they did this.
Its not inferred. We all have digital numbers to look at. The issue is the assumption of what is "too hot", and what the limits of the engine are. This was never a topic of worry before we had these numbers to look at and people started to second guess Ford engineering based on a lack of personal understanding. There are still tons of people out there who wrongly think a 220⁰ operating temp is too hot.

Perhaps I misunderstood you. By "inferred" are talking about the computer algorithm that determines the temperature rather than a physical sensor?

That's kind of what I was getting at, I see many with questions concerns over this, but have not seen anyone actually say that it has happened and for what cause. I am sure the other temp readings will have their own "red zone" which could trigger limp mode for other reason. I say don't worry about it until it actually happens!

lol, no one was saying it wasn't a thing... just that the 280 is wrong and it actually is not as common as people make it out to be.

There is no oil temp sensor... it is in fact inferred, based on CHT and oil pressure and whatever else ford thinks is relative.
