Ford Mustang manual will be pulled “out of our cold dead hands”, says CEO

Ford CEO Jim Farley said the automaker will keep making the iconic rear-wheel-drive Mustang sports car with a manual gearbox for as long as possible.

Speaking to Australian media including CarExpert at the 2026 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix in Melbourne, the Ford CEO said: “Out of our cold, dead hands will we not have a manual Mustang.”

It's almost the last manual car standing in its price and performance range. Here is a list of every new sports car or coupe that has a manual transmission, at least 250 horsepower, and a base price of less than $70,000.

Nissan Z
Ford Mustang GT
Ford Mustang Dark Horse

That's it. The Toyota Supra has been cancelled.

If only they could give us a manual that actually can shift fast and live.

Also forgot the Civic Type R, Acura Integra Type S, Toyota Corolla GR,
You've got me on the M2. I thought the base price was a little over $70K. The cars you mentioned in this comment are not sports cars or coupes.

The DH is over 70k depending on options.

The rest of those cars are the sport trim levels of each model. And while the definition of a "sports car" varies by person, the amount of doors doesn't matter. As for them not being a coupe, the Mustang is also technically a fastback and not a coupe either. Not that it really matters.

Yeah well the bean counter accountants may think otherwise Farley; and you already took the manual away from the Ecoboost. I applaud you for saying that but your actions aren't really aligning with your words...

Too lazy to write this all out myself.
Sports cars used to be only soft tops, but like so much language it became perverted to include even fast shopping baskets.

A coupe or coupé (/kuːˈpeɪ/, also US: /kuːp/) is a passenger car with a sloping or truncated rear roofline and typically with two doors.

The term coupé was first applied to horse-drawn carriages for two passengers without rear-facing seats.[1][2] It comes from the French past participle of couper, "cut".[1]

Some coupé cars only have two seats, while some also feature rear seats. However, these rear seats are usually lower quality and much smaller than those in the front. Furthermore, "A fixed-top two-door sports car would be best and most appropriately be termed a 'sports coupe' or 'sports coupé'".

Now that’s some knowledge being laid down. Right on.
