Hello! I've recently made this write up after looking around on ford part diagrams. SoCal heat has been killing me and my trans temps, I drive a non-PP car so I don't get the extra front transmission cooler, and I like to beat on my car a bit down the street with paddles, transmission oil temps have reached max 240 for me, and they take forever to recover. I haven't seen much on these forums on the topic so I decided to create a new thread for this. If I do end up installing the oil cooler I will try my best to upload photos and videos of the installation process to the fullest extent. Im going to link my doc below if anyone is curious, and I would be grateful if anyone here with a PP car can shed more insight on the cooling system (most confused/curious about the cooling lines being routed from the 10R80 cooler to the front mounted cooler. Ill try my best to check out my radiator today and see if the mounting brackets that I need for the cooler are even on the OEM radiator, if not you will most likely need to upgrade to an aftermarket or PP/DH radiator (They sell DH radiator and fan kits for around 500ish USD I believe.)

In my case the 10 speed transmission had to be replaced due to high temps, i hope a better diagnosis for you

Alright I just took off my Radiator cover and it does seem like the Transmission cooler will fit, albeit a tight squeeze you should be able to get the bolt tightened without removing anything, I’ll attach some photos now.

Yellow circle here is where the cooler will bolt into place, I do think that rubber to the right of it could cause interference but it seems pretty easy to cut.

This yellow circle shows where the cooler bracket slides into position to keep itself up on the radiator, same rubber peice still there

Yep, after I saw these temps I’ve learnt when to back off before my tranny gets too hot but it leave me with little legroom to have fun with the car lol

Looks like that was on a S550. What's the story?

During a relaxed longer trip (130km/h) the gearbox temp kept increasing, had to reduce the speed till about 90/100Km/h. Al of a sudden the 10th gear was not usable anymore and wrench annunciator (DTC P07F7) come on. Had to wait half hour at a rest place to reset. Dealer replaced the gearbox under warranty. And yes, this was a 2019 Ecoboost.

Sorry for my inactivity, I have recently made a few discoveries and have started mapping out the the cooler will fit in place. Cooler seems to need a more complex installation requiring the removal of the passenger side intakes and some radiator brackets, hopefully Ill be able to get it in by today and Ill add some photos and report my progress. Some new info has been added to the doc as well as a few more images. Once the cooler is installed I'll plan out the cooler lines and thermostat valve, once everything that doesn't require opening up the transmission lines are done, Ill probably send the car out to a shop to finish the last bit of line connections so they can also do a transmission fluid change or top-off.

Thx for your update! Please share your transmission oil temperature drop after you install it. When I go for track at Sonoma, my S650 non-pp trans will go overheating in 4 laps(130C) and go into limp mode. I need 2 full cool down lap to bring down the trans oil temp which is very annoying due to the lack of trans oil cooler.

Progress Report #1, Sorry guys! I’ve been off for a while now, but the trans cooler is in place! Was quite a struggle and I had the fight the radiator and AC condenser a bit but after some elbow grease and time I got it in and bolted up. I’ll show some photos now.

Took off the radiator cover, on the top near the intakes is the radiator, in the bottom near the bumper is the AC condenser, and between the two is the transmission cooler, a tight fit but I was able to get it in (removing AC condenser would make install easier)

circled in red is the bolt holding on the cooler, it’s a single 10mm bolt (all part numbers can be found in the doc I linked at the beginning of the thread).

All in all the install wasn’t too bad, you need to remove radiator mounts and passenger intakes to fit the cooler.
In the time I’ve been gone I’ve gone around searching videos and photos of the bottom side of the trans cooler set up. After some better photos and diagrams from Ford I have been able to match common parts and remove them from the required parts list. I’ll try to get the cooler installed in the coming months. AFAIK, the most difficult part of the install is done, the rest is just bolt ons and replacing a fluid line. Any photos of the trans cooler setup from the bottom from anyone with a PP or DH car would be greatly appreciated!

Have you had an opportunity to see what the new operating temp are for the tranny. How about when driving spiritedly?
I need this mode next as my temp are kinda high while slow cruising….

Not yet sadly, still need to get the transmission oil lines figured out, AFAIK temps should be around the same as what people with PP or DH Mustangs state, shouldn’t break 220 even with heavy track use IIRC

Progress Report #2, I have ordered the rest of the parts needed for this install, just the cooler lines, some mounting bolts, and clips to connect the lines to the coolers, the install from here seems very straightforward. I will try to get some more photos and videos as I install, I also have added a new tab to my document including a rough Installation guide. It seems that the most difficult part of this install would be getting the front heat exchanger sandwiched in. Expect install to be done within the next few days or weeks 👍

Progress Report #3, I’ve picked up the transmission cooler lines, retaining clips, and bracket bolts. After a bit more analyzing I’ve gotten an idea of how I will put the line in place.
S650 Mustang (DONE) Adding the Performance Package Trans cooler to a non-PP car IMG_7689

Red Circle: Flexible connections, get connected to the heat exchanger at the front of the car
Blue Circle: Thermostat, controls the flow of fluid to the heat exchanger, this part bolts onto the passenger engine mount bracket studs
Green Circle: This part connects to the transmission, and replaces the 7A031 line as seen in the non-PP diagram on my doc.
My gameplan:
1. Start at the bottom, and snake the heat exchanger connections to the top and bolt the thermostat on using the two HN1 bolts in the PP diagram
2. (Keep a few rags to plug the open transmission ports) Since these lines are somewhat flexible we can replace the line connections 1 by 1. Remove the 7Z465 retaining clip, remove the old connection and put in the new connection, and reinstall the 7Z465 Retaining Clip
3. Remove the 2 HB2 bolts holding the other side of the 7A031 line in and remove and replace with the new line connection, reuse the HB2 bolts to bolt on the connection. Step 2 and 3 can be done in any order I don’t think that it matters much.
4. Get back at the top, to access the heat exchanger connections the passenger intake and radiator cover must be removed, plug in the connections and use the two extra 7Z465 retaining clips that you bought to connect them.
5. AFAIK that’s it, turn on the car and check for leaks, if no leaks then celebrate, if there are leaks then do something ig.

Thank you for doing this. It’s good to know if I ever need to do this too, I’d have your post and experience to guide me.

You’re welcome! Someone had to do it, ford really screwed up with the design of this cooler, pulled it straight from the F150. Mustang doesn’t get enough airflow from under to make it effective. Hoping for a trouble free install tommorow!
