It's a muscle car not a sports car! If you want a light car there are plenty of examples out there.
.
Ford got the SCCA to call the Mustang a sports car way back in 1979 it was part of their advertising campaign. Mustang has been called a sports car every since ask the insurance companies and see.

I think Ford not only had the tree hugging generation in the US but also the export markets in mind when they decided to develop the hybrid S650. The 2.3 EcoBoost petrol with its 179 grams of CO2 is rapidly becoming unsellable in foreign countries that are governed by eco hippies. So they need something either hybrid or full electric to keep the emission gestapo happy and I guess full electric is a bridge too far for now. Transplanting the hybrid tech from the Fusion is relatively easy and cheap.

As an Ecoboost owner it might be a little easier to accept vs the "gotta have a V8" crowd (I also own a 71 Mach 1 351C...).

I will say as a 2015 owner, it feels slightly odd owning the last model design that uses analog gauges now that the 2018 is all digital.

It's all about performance though, I think there is literally no way it won't be a step forward in power, handling and speed. It's kind of their thing with the Mustang.

The digital gauges are only an option.....analogue is still standard :)

Who cares? Ford isn't shutting the door.
What Porsche is doing is being done for the right reasons. And the Mustang is to Ford what the 911 is to Porsche.

"In the end, the disadvantages outweighed the advantages," Achleitner said of a hybrid 911.

Those disadvantages included weight and price. A hybrid 911 would have been several hundred pounds heavier than a normal 911, which would have thrown off its dynamic capabilities.

Clearly Ford realises it has an up hill struggle to get Mustang enthusiasts on board with the idea. It'll be an interesting 3 years.......

I'm sure there will be some people who think it's a good idea.

My opinion is it's a terrible idea. I think cars are already too complex and expensive. And weight is the enemy of performance. I realize you can overcome weight issues with technology, but I don't want a Mustang with a little boosted sewing machine engine, some silent electric motors and speakers blaring a fake V8 noise in my ears. The thing that bothers me the most is that the hybrid philosophy is that they are supposed to be good for the environment but in reality they aren't. The entire technology is based on lies.

Ford announces all sorts of shit it never does. Hell, the S550 was supposed to be significantly smaller and lighter than the s197 cars, and that never happened. Quite the opposite, as it turns out.

Ford needs to plant the Ecoboost V-6 with 450HP and 500TQs into the Mustang. Now THAT would be a thing!!!

Better still would be a short-stroke Voodoo of around 4.5L. With a proper 0 - 180 - 180 - 0 crank and 4 into 1 exhaust.
