When my old iPod conked out, Apple stopped making them, so I bought a small, cheap iPhone to store my iTunes music and never connected to a carrier.

I have my Android phone connected to the car via Bluetooth.

Could I connect the iPhone as a USB device just to hear music and access it through the steering wheel voice control?

My guess is you don’t want to pay for a monthly subscription which would probably include all your current music as well as music you would want (and don’t want).

I recommend transferring your music over from iTunes to your Android. They are several programs that can do that for you. Then you are just using one device and the user interface will be much cleaner.

But the answer as you have already found is yes.

I have a subscription to XM and use the iPhone only on longer trips. I downloaded several articles on moving my music from iTunes to my Samsung phone. One of these days.

I transferred my entire IPod music collection (5000 +songs) to my laptop and then to a usb stick. Plugged it in to the port in the car-problem solved!

Wow. That is interesting. I don't know if I can even figure out where my iTunes music is located :( I might like to try that.

I don't know.
I'm not an Apple guy as such. But I used an I Pod for years and, as far as I know, an I Phone will function the same when music is downloaded to it. But you'll need a cell connection (or hot spot) for cloud based stuff or Spotify etc.

I'm not worried about cloud-based stuff. I'm moving my iTunes over to a USB and will see how that works (less wires and smaller). This older iPhone I have in place of an iPod seems to work

I'm copying over my music now. Did it keep your playlists when you put it on a USB?

I just downloaded all of it and play on shuffle in the car. The algorithm built into the car seems to have word association with the song titles. For instance, if you have multiple versions of the same song, they will play all of them back to back. At least YES, Supertramp, Metallica and the WHO will play the live version then studio version. I’ve also found some more word associations. The only example I can think of now is “love”, I ended up with the Scorpions, Godsmack and Motly Crue together, they all have “love” in the title. Let me know what you all find
Cheers,
Mike

Thanks Mike. I'm just about done copying to a USB (3.314 songs).
