Hands on steering wheel warning

A lot of user say you can turn it off in the settings. no you cannot. there is another system that uses the overhead camera to check if you are getting tired and paying attention and warns you if this is the case. this is optional. but not the hands on the wheel warning.
and no, disabling speed limit warnings and lane centring assist etc doesnt help neither. those are disabled permanently in my car (with forscan).
and I dont think it uses any sensors in the wheel but the overhead camera to check if your hands are somewhere they shouldnt be. this means if someone is on the passenger seat the camera mistakes the hands of the passenger with yours and starts the warning. at least that is my interpretation so far.

When I use adaptive cruise and lane centering on an open highway, I often drive one handed at the bottom of the wheel. Error pops up frequently. When I first got the car I experimented gripping the wheel all over (squeeze and release), putting weight on it, etc.

I'm a photographer and shoot handheld with some pretty large lenses. I am able to hold extremely still. It was then that I realized jogging the wheel is what the car is looking for. I usually drive with the steering set to normal I have not tested with other steering mode settings. Not sure if this would have any effect. If I'm well within the lines and the system is not alerting with an orange correction I don't think I should be alerted, but in my experience it does so anyway until steering input is detected.

As mentioned, the steering sensor goes off of weight. You can't cup the wheel from the bottom or it will alert you.

On the subject. Why am I the only one who is disturbed that people are bitching about keeping both hands on the wheel while your car literally steers itself? Have we really gotten that spoiled and immune to safe driving? People are so quick to rip on distracted drivers, but we're going to get mad about a nanny alert for a convince feature that we dont need and is arguably much less safe than driving with both hands on the wheel like we've been doing for the last 100 years?

Its a European thing. American cars can turn it off anytime.

Its more complicated than just a forscan setting. European cars have different safety requirments and are also de-tuned.

so I had claude a go at the forscan lists and it explained to me that this warning in fact belongs to the lane centring/ keeping whatever modules. this is weird because that is always turned off. this paired with the completely inappropriate warnings and some other small weird things with the electronics I will just book this under software gone haywire for now and just see if it happens again

My 2025 is on the ragged edge of annoying with all the electronic nanny crap. At least I can toggle most of it off (USA). It makes me miss my 06 GT. But hey, this new car is awesome on so many ways, it's just a list of pros and cons.

One thing I know....I will NEVER buy any car newer than what I have. it's just going to get worse....much worse.

However, the warning never showed up when I was driving solo and my hands were in fact off the wheel.

Is that system really that bad? Is it possible to disable it with forscan? I really don't need to be lectured by my car about what I can or cannot do.

Not sure if same, but on Australian models you double click the ‘Lane Keeping’ button on steering wheel to disable…

It has nothing to do with hands on steering wheel pressure. It has to do with movement.

You can't disable just the warning if you have the driving assist features enabled. You have to jog the wheel a few degrees. Bugs me too. 🫩

This system in my BMW X5 works very well. Just lightly tap the steering wheel with my fingers and the warning lights are turned off.
Would be nice if the Mustang worked this well.

The point is the hands on the wheel warning alerts you when your hands ARE on the wheel if you’re going in a straight line for more than a few hundred metres. So you then have to jiggle the wheel when actually you’re on a dead straight highway. As others have said, it’s very annoying - I just drive with lane keep assist off so it doesn’t happen.

If it works on US cars, you can try changing the country code in the APIM from Switzerland to US to see if it allows you to get rid of the warning.

Go to this line in the APIM:

Switzerland should have a 4348 there. Change it to 5553, reboot the APIM and allow a few key cycles for it to take effect before you road test it.
