Unfortunately, I was not. After trying to outsmart that incredibly frustrating design for a few minutes, and finding no help online, I finally threw in the towel to avoid actually breaking it beyond repair (and then needing to replace the entire valve cover, apparently).

Good news is, you cannot see the scratched up PCV Valve tip underneath the quick disconnect hose that attaches to the catch can. If you believe that this knocking sound (buzzing from this area seems to be normal operation) is being caused by a bad PCV Valve, I would probably recommend taking it back to the dealership to have them remove/disassemble the valve cover under warranty. Seems like an unnecessary risk otherwise, especially with that brand new long block replacement. Best of luck.
Got the collar off using a 2 prong puller popped right off. I'll provide a pic of the puller and collar when I get time.

Just since it was recommended to change out oil to full synthetic (good advice), look up how much synthetic is in semi-synthetic oil on Google. Exactly as much as I always thought.

You will need a 2 prong puller with a cup head that fits over the top of the PCV valve. The claws of the puller under the collar and then just tighten the puller and the collar will pop up.

AWESOME IDEA. Thanks for sharing how the removal process works.

I only have a large gear puller, so as an alternative I possibly would use a deep-well socket just the right clearance diameter, and then apply force on the fitting's top to drive the fitting out of the grommet/seal. Of course something that would not damage the upper fitting would be necessary.
