I know there are a ton of 10R80 transmission cooling threads so not looking to repeat anything but I can't find any info specifically on the trans cooling assembly for the Dark Horse. Does anyone know if the trans cooler is oil to air cooling or is there a heat exchanger for coolant to oil by the transmission pan?

Thanks!

on all automatic Mustangs plus the Dark Horse with the Tremec TR-3160, there is an auxiliary transmission fluid cooler in the stack of heat exchangers in front of the engine. manual GTs do not have this

Does anyone know of upgrade options for the transmision cooler? I have been experiencing constant transmission heating issues on the track. Leading to the car not shifting quickly and going into limp mode.

Have you had the fluid level checked? Just because the dealer did a pre delivery inspection doesn’t mean they checked the fluid in the transmission.

if you’ve been on track > 2 times, I’d strongly consider a fluid replacement. NOT a flush- you are pumping out old fluid and replacing with new fluid only. The 10R80 doesn’t seem to respond well to often advertised “transmission flush” services.

I’m not saying this to either say this is the problem, or that you don’t need additional cooling, only to rule out this as a variable.

Thank you for the valuable information. I have taken the car to the track over 5 or 7 times since I bought it. The last time I was out on track was the worst experience with the car going into limp mode. I took the car into the delaership to have the transmission fluid checked. After checking they advised me not to change the transmission fluid. I have a track event on Friday, I was told if there was anymore issues to bring it back to them after the track event.

I’m going to predict it will behave worse and when you do change the fluid, it will improve, but may still need some cooling assistance.

So the 7A095B part that is just below the transmission is the transmission fluid cooler.

The 7A095A oil cooler may be there, I have not taken a look but the performance pack GTs and the Dark Horse handling package care (or maybe even Dark Horse w/o handling package, I do not know) have additional oil cooling down low.

See as this guy upgrades his non-performance package GT with the additional oil cooling.

095B lookis like the water to trans oil cooler in a regular mustang.

095A is showing the air cooled one.

You could buy a second 095A and have a ton of cooling. Or, you coud buy a small aftermarket one and plumb it in.

often your cooling circuit is actually pressure regulator bypass. The actual flow could be limited by design. Some are torque converter outlet. The oil might be pretty cool, just not geting enough oil to it. I hope to never know the interals of our 10 speeds, but I used to rebuild transmissions in the early 2000's .

A finned oil pan does help. PPE makes one for under $300. Can replace the filter in there while you're at it. I thought the orignal one is plastic like my ram 1500. Maybe I am wrong. Also, aftermaket oil pans usually come with more oil capacity.

Transmission flushes are good. They push fresh fluid in, while removing old fluid. The problem is what is the new fluid?

Great thread which I had not seen before. Thank you!

Already on p. 1 there is post, #18, of an S550 guy who built a custom set up in front of his radiator and dropped his transmission temps from 240 down to a range of 210-215.
With the dark horse, you get both the bottom side water to trans fluid cooler from the F150 10R80s, and the extra heat exchanger up front. One thing to note is that the fluid lines going up to the front of the car go through a thermostat, you could try to modify it to open at an earlier temp or you could remove it entirely. Since part of the trans is cooler by the coolant, getting a bigger radiator would also contribute to lower trans temps. Finned transmission pans can allow for the heat from the fluid to dissipate better, and you can go as far as modifying the transmission cooler at the front to have more cooling capacity, the area there is tight, so if you were to expand the transmission cooler, I would recommend making it taller instead of thicker.
