Had my new Mustang for 6 days. Owned a 2015 for years and never once had a close call, same with my 2020 Supra. First week of the 2024 and I lost control driving straight on a highway during mild acceleration in normal mode on dry roads.

Don’t know if a tire popped, wheel was damaged, tie rod snapped, or maybe some other odd reason or mistake I made. Dashcam was in the mail, and not a single car that was around me stopped to see if I was okay so all I have is a memory of hitting a minor hump in the road and then the vehicle jerked left and I was unable to get it back straight after it veered left and lost control into a guardrail.

Other odd thing was about a mile before I got a notification regarding the front camera being obstructed and collision assist wasn’t available, but not sure if this is related.

What’s everyone’s thoughts? Is she totaled? Anyone experience or seen anything like this?

@Exodrai ..... first thank God you/family/others weren't injured. The pictures gave me a knot in my stomach. I feel real bad for you but at least you are alive to drive Mustangs! Second, although some body shops can do amazing repairs, I'd want it written-off. I can't believe it will ever track right and the re-sale would be bad. Third, a couple of years ago a Porsche suv passed me going about 85 mph. Up ahead it looked like he hit a piece of 2x4 on the highway. He shot right into a guard rail and across onto the opposite lane. I'm sure it was a write-off too as one of his front wheels was dangling. The 2x4 went flying too. It happened so fast I think the steering wheel was just jerked out of his hands or the front wheel just swung it his suv around. I was way past as I was only a couple of car lengths behind him but others stopped. Fingers crossed that your insurance company writes it off.

im so glad you're alright! that sucks about your car, though. unfortunately, with damage like that, it might be better off totaled. its never going to drive quite right again, even if it looks perfect. honestly, i would recommend that (if this is even a thing) an investigation is done on the cause of failure. i am guessing here, but your description almost sounds like there was a faulty part, because most debris on the road that could do that would be very hard to miss, and the pre-collision assist message would not have done that. im hoping everything works out, man!

I'm sure it's totaled! I'm glad your okay!

Even scarier (to me) is I had an almost exact scenario! In my case I didn't dent anything except my pride. I'm of the opinion the reason my episode occurred was because the Advance Tracking system interfered with my ability to correct the situation. I assume this was the case as the ABS pump activated!

Like you, it was an unexpected dip in the road which dipped lower on the left than it did on the right. I now turn the damn thing off every time I drive the car. While I'm sure Ford thinks their system is nearly perfect, it is not, and others here share my concerns.

Sorry about what happened, but glad you are OK. I continue to appreciate how well these cars can protect us.

Considering the amount of damage and especially the multiple airbag deployment, I'd consider the car totaled.

I was thinking road debris as well. That, maybe something interfered with a wheel. But that would have to be pretty stout, like part of a tie-down, the nylon web material used to secure things getting wrapped around an exact spot.

Above is a recent thread on the lane assist feature. It would seem more likely the unsettling of the car, with lane assist overcorrecting, could have contributed to the accident.

I've never had to deal with an accident of this type before. IDK if the insurance company can pull any data from the Body Control Module, anything that would support the idea the car didn't deal with the momentary disruption well.

First off @Exodrai so glad you were able to walk away from this one. I agree with the others, it should be totaled.

did you have all the driving aids turned on? that was the first mistake.
That’s just a little severe without knowing the cause. Maybe one of these aids prevented the crash from being worse.

Wow that stinks! Most importantly good to hear you are ok. Hard to look at that. I'm sure you are gutted.

I definitely had all the aids on, which is one of my suspicions on what could have caused the original loss of control. Having the car for less than a week, and two of those days sitting at a tint shop, and another day my girlfriend drove it. All that being said I really didn't even have a chance to really dig deep into the settings and how they affected how the car drove. Aside from a catastrophic failure of a part, it sounds like its possible that the dip in the road caused the LSD to send more power to the right wheel, causing the advancetrac and lane keep assist to pull the vehicle right, and at that point it was too far gone so letting off the throttle and trying to save it likely made it worse.

All in all I am just glad the car did it's job. Thank you all for the well wishes and I am truly grateful for modern safety standards that allowed me to walk away with nothing more than a smashed thumb, a small burn on my hand, and a bit of soreness.

Looking at copart auctions, the car is unfortunately likely totaled which is very sad. It was the perfect color, low mileage, and I got it for a steal at $40k + TTL with every option but the active exhaust. But if it is totaled, you can bet ill be looking again for a 2018+ mustang again, and if I get a 24, the damn safety systems will be severely looked at / turned off because as I said I never had a single close call in my 2015, and I can guarantee I drove that thing much closer to its limits than this 24 would have ever seen from me.

not faulting you at all if the driving aids were on. One would hope that the systems work to save it but I know if and when I get a new car absolutely all aids will be off.
I buy cars to drive, not be driven by software. As far as i am concerned it's nowhere near ready for prime time.

This right here is pretty scary. I know the message mentioned collision assist but did you have lane keep or anything else active which could have glitched if there was a camera or electrical issue?

Yes I believe all systems were active, and if I remember correctly when looking at all the settings the lane keep assist was set to "Aid only" at the lowest setting. Ill attach a snip from the owners manual of the error light that was illuminated. I had just picked up the car from the tint shop and looking at the camera location behind the rearview mirror it looks like it was just dirty. I didn't get a message saying anything was unavailable except for the pre-collision assist.

Usually when the system gets turned off it is due to a blocked radar sensor(located in the center of the lower front bumper). In which case it will stay off until the next key cycle for it to try again. That would indicate to me that the "driving aids" that everyone seems to credit(and want to disable) for an accident like this were actually disabled at the time of the accident. Sorry for your loss and I hope you are able to find another car that meets your desires. They are out there.
