The Added Costs of Buying a New Car

Our first new car was an 85 mustang 4 banger, stick, no thrills. Was 30 years old with 9 years military under my belt. Kids today want things NOW and need to learn, it takes time and patience.

Ugh what a waste of youth and time.
At 19 I already had an 87 Mustang GT, at 21 I had new loaded F150 and by 29 a Mustang, Vette, a new Harley, an Expedition, and a house.
I just went to work and partied my ass off.

As I have always done, I have been putting together all of the additions I plan on doing to my new Mustang when it comes in. Its scary enough to be paying between $50-60,000 for a new car, but after you get it, it is a shock to find out how much cash you need to spend.

* Oklahoma collects sales and excise tax when you get you tags: $2500
* Basic PPF treatment: $2-4,000
* Ceramic coating: $600-1500
* Insurance:
* Misc upgrades, like a Novistretch bra, dash camera, louvers, floor and trunk mats.

You can wind up spending $10,000 in addition to the cost of the car, before you have your first oil change. And this is on a car that is going to be a daily driver. It would be hard for most young buyers to justify buying any new car, especially a Mustang.

We call that boomer accessories. They add up and are not needed. Either someone wants to brag about the money they are spending or they need to feel important.
If I’m going to drop 10k on S650 aftermarket it is going to be a Whipple.

Car shows where most of the cars have bra's and louvers instead of tint...eww. Don't forget to add NB sneakers and jorts to the list of expenses.

First off, I do not decide on how what I do to my cars based on the vagaries of fashion. I like the look of quarter window scoops and aluminum rear window louvers is the only practical way to counter the greenhouse effect of the rear glass. The car shows i go to are full of bras to protect the cars on the road. Most would use a Novistretch bra if they made one for their Mustangs. It is hell getting the bugs removed from the grill and radiator. And it only takes seconds to remove.

I fail to see the point of a bra if the car already has PPF and ceramic. If you're that worried about some bugs, just seal it in a bubble and leave it in the garage at that point.

It actually is hard for most young buyers to justify buying any true new sports car. It does take time to work one's way up any kind of compensation ladder so they can afford to buy things like Mustang GT's without crippling debt.

While a lot of people want them, some of those that can't afford them realize this, save for them, and buy them when they can afford them. You included a lot of expensive aftermarket things as, I guess, a requirement in owning such a car. They aren't required. Insurance is required as it should be. No decent insurance is "cheap". Taxes are a way of life and the more expensive the car, the more the taxes and sometimes, age, driving record, and credit rating is a significant factor in insurance costs.

There should be no "shock" in how much money one has to spend (not wants to spend) in owning any newly ordered vehicle. Homework avoids shock and helps one make a better decision. Going into heavy debt to own a car is never a good decision unless one doesn't mind being a "slave to other people". Just food for thought. Enjoy that new car.

I just put on rear mats, cargo tray and screen protector for lcd. Gonna daily and enjoy. I try not to worry about the small stuff. When the car gets beat up I will go buy another.

While I didn't necessarily party my ass off, I did enjoy my time as a young adult. But I was also responsible, built a career, and saved and invested as well. No help from anyone, mind you. Today, many of those my age who "partied their asses off" struggle to pay their rent, put food on the table and gas in their cars, and will likely never be able to retire comfortably.

Perhaps they should have made more prudent life choices when they were young instead of "wasting their youth and time" ...

Give it time, it will go up again within probably the first year. They’ll dazzle you with their declarations and rationale, but it’s basically because S/A does zero to combat vehicle theft, zero effort to recover stolen vehicles or any property that was stolen from vehicles. The good news is that they’re mostly looking for Ford F series trucks which are fantastically easy to get into.

FWIW, my Raptor and bike insurance was a wash - one was higher, the other lower and the wife’s car was negligibly less coming from VA to TX.

My insurance quote was a small shock, but it's also irritating to pay so much knowing I can only drive one vehicle at a time. While I am cautious about money, I don't plan on leaving a lot for my heirs. I spent my life building my future and doing practical things. Just so I could get to a point of enjoying retirement. The thing I hate is that in order to keep my credit rating high, I have to take out an occasional loan.

I go cross country to enjoy my interests, cars, planes and history. I learned that interstates hate car paint. Through experience, I know that ceramic coatings do not do enough. Even PPF is limited protection. A stretch bra keeps things out of the air intake and adds protection to vulnerable areas. Maybe not very pretty, but I am more concerned about taking care of my car.
