The algorithm consists of several variables to include inferred engine coolant temp, cylinder head temp (most critical), throttle position, rpm, oil pressure changes, and thermal history. At approx 270 degrees, the PCM will begin to pull timing and notify you with the idiot light on the dash. In the ball park of 280 to 290 the PCM puts the vehicle in full "limp" to protect itself. I am working with a local tuner and an engineer from one of the major tuners to correct the BCM "strategy". Prior to 2024, tuners had the ability to change the "strategy" as it was part of the PCM but all that changed with the Gen7. The strategy is completely separate from tuning in this model and currently none of the major tuners are addressing it because the "strategy" is located in the BCM and NOT the PCM. My guess is a corrected "strategy" will be available hopefully sometime next year. In the meantime, we have adjusted a few of the tuning variables associated with temp to keep it from going into limp mode. I have recently installed a standalone oil temp gauge which indicates the oil temperatures are consistently MUCH cooler for during normal, spirited, and track driving than what the PCM is inferring. Adding the cooler is a very noticeable difference. Hope this provides some insight and explanation.
About how much cooler are you running. I installed the track MMR oil cooler in mine. What gauge did you decide to go with to monitor oil temps?

On average, 20-25 degrees during track days. I installed the OEM oil cooler from the PP/DH. The gauge is a digital Autometer with the sensor installed in a Glow Shift oil filter sandwich plate.

Were you aware of the inferred oil values and the inability to correct them before you bought and installed the cooler?

yes I was aware. I learned from your thread and another thread I’ve been following that the algorithm needs to changed. I was hoping you were able to work that. I’m going to reach out to Roush see if they’ll be willing to update my Mustang. For now I’ll install a sensor in the MMR manifold to verify temps.
The tech that installed my cooler also concurred that the algorithm needs to be updated. Hopefully someone is willing to update the algorithm…

The thing with updating the algorithm to match that of a PP/DH car is that even if someone can figure that out, the temps displayed are still nothing more than an educated guess, it doesn't fully solve the problem, it just makes it potentially less inaccurate.

The PCM/BCM takes the CHT and infers "ok, if CHT is "x" then Oil Temp must by "y" and coolant temp must be "z" (there are other factors, such as ambient temp, TPS, etc., but you get the idea). On a PP/DH car, the formula is the same with the exception that it simply allows for the addition of the upgraded radiator and oil cooler by reducing both "y" and "z" by a set percentage/amount. In both cases, oil temp and coolant temp are nothing more than guesses based on a number of factors. So even if someone with a base GT were able to upgrade their PCM/BCM to the PP/DH algorithm, it wouldn't really fix the underlying problem.

Thinking out loud, I wonder if a tuner could simply disable whatever inputs trigger the pulling of timing and eventual limp mode? One could then install a gauge that monitors actual coolant and oil temps. That way you'd have ACTUAL data and know when it needed cool down without worrying about the PCM/BCM attempting to guess when to do so based on some random calculations that have been shown to be 20*-30* off in the first place.

I was considering this mod until I found out the cars electronics weren't compatible to read the new temps. What a stupid thing coming from Ford.
Palm Beach Dyno Just updated my tunes today to account for the added oil cooler. Hit them up and they can take care of this for you if you have your car tuned with them đź’Ż

Also, just to spread around knowledge, there is a tab for this in VCM Editor Beta. You just have to change the tables. Could probably use the tables from a stock PP Mustang's restore file. Not 100% sure, just wanted to make sure you guys knew.

What kind of temps are you seeing on the dash? I purchased the MPVI4, 4 credits, and downloaded the HPTuner software. Wanted to get a look at to see if this is something i can figure out. Is the table your stock file or is it the updated tune from PBD?

I'm working with Polo at PBD by the way. How is the car with the updated tune?

Can you give me a snapshot of the "General" and "Variable Oil" tab?

This is from my stock file. Personally, I was just thinking of using a restore file from someone with a PP and putting that in there since the oil cooler comes stock with them.

That is huge.... be a matter of time until the other tuners are offering it as well.
Looks like another mod just hit my windshield.

Here is the non PP inferred data and the PP/DH data. Easy change

Interesting.... Has this been available the whole time tuning has been released? It seems like folks who have asked tuners (up until this last week) and some tuners themselves (via published social media posts) didn't realize this...

Yeah hiding in plain sight. In all fairness HPT releases updates to VCM editor and slips in new tables and data we can change from time to time. But I believe this has been in since day one.
