I work at my friends shop

My Toyotas have never been back to the dealer for anything

I buy Toyota filters 6 at a time for under $5.00 each and oil in 5 qt jugs.

I do a LOF and tire rotation every 7500 miles when I get some ambition and an open lift.

A couple of my Ford's may have had dealership LOF's, I know my F150 did, and my 07 Mustang did because I wanted a service invoice that documented that the car was 16 years old w/12K miles on it... plus I wanted them to add some limited slip fluid which was going to be a royal PITA in my garage in FL with no lift. The dealer charged me less than $40. I can't buy the oil, filter, and limited slip additive for that.

I wanted my oil in the 2024 done after 1000 miles before I put 700 miles on it moving it to FL

rather than deal with all the under belly hardware I figured I'd just bite the bullet and have the dealer do it.

$89.95

OEM filter and 10 quarts of oil

Cripes the 10 quarts of oil would have run me close to $60, add in a filter and we are probably close to $70... plus shop rags... we burn our waste oil so disposal is not a cost I eat, but I can't change the oil for less than the dealer is doing it for.

I am getting old, there is no joy when I work on my own cars anymore.

I am willing to let a competent dealership have the honor of doing a LOF on the Mustang once a year

Between customer cars, neighbors cars, my bikes and other cars I don't mind not doing the 5.0 just yet. That belly pan R&I seems like a royal PITA especially on ramps or jack stands

@msofka ..... used to do it myself. Now with all the new (2024) belly pan bolts, snaps and push pins plus oil disposal they can do it. If they don't have it in stock, the parts department orders Motorcraft 5W-30 FULL synthetic oil (10 quarts) and Motorcraft oil filter for me. It is ready when I arrive for my appointment. Purchasing my oil directly avoids the temptation by a dealership to use bulk oil that may be in their shop hose dispensers and may not be Motorcraft 5W-30 FULL synthetic. The techs know me and pre fill the oil filter with oil before installing it and contrary to Ford recommendations they DO rub oil onto the filter's rubber gasket. They get a tip from me for "humoring" me. Last I heard Motorcraft FULL synthetic is made by Conoco Phillips and S-Oil (South Korea) provides a super VI package for the oil. My uncle used to work for Shell Oil as VP of chemical research and said there is a MASSIVE difference between semi and full synthetic. In his opinion FULL synthetic has far superior VI (viscosity index) improvers that form long chain polymers to protect the engines at critical heat times and do so at least 10 times faster and better than semi's do. That's my 2 cents worth.

Is Full (/Manufacturer) Service History (FSH / FMSH) not a thing used car buyers look for over there ?
Yes, it continues to be important. There are different avenues which can support service record keeping.

A. Ford Service History, with two options.

1. Have all service accomplished at the dealer; they will upload and update records.

2. https://www.ford.com/support/ This site is the Internet version of the Ford Pass App, with more detail. Once you log in, scroll down to "Service History". There is an option to add your own service records. While they no longer accept attachments, you can make notes, which will upload into Ford's official systems and compliment whatever records they have. The site I referenced is going through some changes. I'm hoping they will allow us to continue to upload our own records.

B. CarFax. CarFax is used for accident history, but the site is now linked with the dealer and sucks in service record history. At CarFax, you can also add your own service records, with notes and photos. Dealers link to CarFax for virtually every sale, displaying your files with others.

C. Personal records. Whatever I do, I take a handful of photos as proof. I also keep a log book, with penned entries, handwritten notes with dates and mileage. For the more significant receipts, I keep those.

I do all three. I don't think anyone has to do any one thing or use any specific site or service. IMO, It's more about building confidence. Anyone considering a purchase or trade, good records (or lack thereof) gives a feel if the history and treatment of the car has been genuine (or not).

So I’ve always enjoyed changing my own oil, and I wouldn’t mind doing it still, but I figured I would take my Darkhorse to a dealer.

I would ask if anyone has an opinion- but I know you do! So lay them on me!

Am I better to do it myself? If so, any tips?

Is a dealer the right to go? There is a few around me, how do I pick the best one?

thanks guys!
I just sold my 2014 GT convertible after 10 years of ownership. Although I always did oil changes myself prior to owning that car, I had all of the oil changes completed at the same local dealership for the '14. Never had a problem in all those years, and the "while you wait" service was easy and comfortable. I wouldn't use a quick oil change shop for that service though.

I have a service plan covers oil changes and basic maintenance. Just had my oil done at the Eldar ford of tampa quicklane. They used the motorcraft full synthetic. They were going to rotate the tires then realized I have a staggered set up with directional tires. With my back and hip being grumpy and disabled ill let the young buks at the dealer do it. Had a great conversation with one of the service reps. He shoehorned truck horns I front of the spare tire was funny as he'll to hear from a mustang.

I'm planning to do my own change though I haven't compared the cost of oil and filter to the dealer change.
-Can anyone recommend a set of ramps to fit the 9" wides on my 2024 GT? Are the $60 plastic ones at Advanced Auto o.k.?
-Has anyone left the underbelly pan off after their oil change? My 2007 GT didn't have one anyway.

I think it should be fine i used mine to put my jeep up at a better angle to hose the tail mud off and i was running 35x12.5x37 no issues i think they have ones for cars and trucks may be off on that. As for the belly pan on the new mustangs that is for aerodynamics. Underbody airflow management.

I'm too damn lazy to do it also don't want to deal with used oil. I have 2 of the largest Ford dealerships within 5 miles of my house so I just let the dealer do it and the service record is easy to show a prospective buyer when selling.

The dealer where I bought my 2024 Mustang provides free oil changes entire rotations for two years. However, they use a synthetic blend. I’m getting my first oil change soon. I mentioned I want synthetic only and he said they’ll add something to make it synthetic. Snake oil? šŸ˜‚

what are they talking about?

I have been taking my cars back to the dealership for maintenance since I moved to this area 15 years ago without any problems. This weekend I just took the Mustang in for its first oil change at 1000 miles (996mi) and was able to watch everything they were doing and it cost $88.95. I have no problems with buying service contracts at the time of sale so I won't have any surprises with price increases later on but I did pay for this change using my Rewards Points. It is good thing to have a record of all of the maintenance in Ford's system.

It's a matter that needs to be clarified with this dealer.

While the Service Advisor could have been deceptive, it might have also been a poor choice of words or part of a hurried conversation. No one can add anything to an existing blend oil to make it synthetic.

For the majority of dealers, Motorcraft Synthetic Blend (Dino + Synthetic, blended) is the default oil used. If this dealer gifts free oil changes and rotations for the first two years, there are different ways they could play a change from Synthetic Blend to Full Synthetic (Synthetic only). One, they could just have a charge for the difference, whatever that would be, to cover their increased cost in using the more expensive oil. The other, depending on their promotions' rules, could charge you full price for a oil change.

Different dealers have different advertisements, promotions and maintenance programs. I'd re-engage this dealer to confirm theirs.

If they insist they physically add something to Motorcraft Blend to turn it into Motorcraft Synthetic, leave them, post the dealer site here, then seek out another shop.
