The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD Is the Most Powerful Street-Legal Pony Ever

DEARBORN, Mich., Sept. 16, 2024 – The all-new 2025 Mustang GTD – the apex of any Mustang ever engineered by Ford – sets a new performance bar with 815 horsepower, 664 pound-feet of torque and a top speed of 202 miles per hour, the most of any street-legal Mustang ever.

The certified horsepower and torque, along with the Mustang GTD’s cutting-edge active aerodynamics, carbon-ceramic brakes, and inboard-rear suspension with semi-active dampers are key elements as Mustang GTD prepares to deliver on the promise of an official sub-seven-minute lap of the Nürburgring.

"We’ve been laser focused since day 1 to make Mustang GTD the first-ever supercar with world-class performance and the soul of a Mustang,” said Mustang GTD Chief Program Engineer Greg Goodall. “GTD's heart is its supercharged 5.2-liter V8, packing more horsepower per liter than the Porsche 911 GT3 RS.”

The supercharged 5.2-liter V8 improves on previous Mustang engines, benefiting from Mustang’s first-ever dry-sump oil system that can help keep the engine lubricated through sustained and demanding cornering.

That dry-sump oil system also enables a slightly elevated maximum engine speed of 7,650 rpm, up 100 rpm from the previous 5.2-liter V8 maximum. Revised intake and exhaust, a standard titanium exhaust, and a smaller supercharger pulley help achieve the engine output ratings.

Beyond the power needed to achieve its 202 mph top speed, Mustang GTD also features a Drag Reduction System that can change the angle of the rear wing and activate flaps under the front of the car to find exactly the right balance between airflow for speed and downforce for grip, depending on performance conditions.

“We've combined the work of talented engineers and designers, as well as an extremely capable driver, with Mustang GTD technology, power and aerodynamics,” said Goodall. “We can’t wait to deliver on our sub-7-minute promise to GTD customers.”

so, you can spend 350K+ for 815hp and 664lb-ft, or spend 10k on top of a base GT or DH for... 815hp and 615lb-ft with warranty, 875hp without warranty. i honestly expected closer to the high 800s in terms of power for the GTD. i understand you get active aero, better weight distribution, carbon fiber body, carbon ceramic brakes, and all that for the price, but on just power alone, this is kinda disappointing

With the rumors of the zr1 and how that allocation works, you can get 2 of those for less than 1 of these. And it makes more power

I don’t think some people get the purpose of this car
I think most people get the purpose. But it’s priced at unobtanium levels of price. 95% of the ppl who buy this car are not taking it to the track, but keeping it for resale value. Not only that, but I’d go as far to say even for the 5% of people who will take it to the track, less than 1% of those people are good enough drivers to actually be able to beat the GT3 Porsche. This car is cool, don’t get me wrong. But for the price and what it is, just as a car enthusiast, it doesn’t get me very excited or even impress me as much as the corvette or the Porsche cars. And if anything, multimatic would be the ones to deserve the praise, not ford.

If they buy the car, they can do whatever they want with it, but it's still built for a specific purpose. Just because something becomes a collectors item doesn't mean it isn't built for a specific purpose lol If you don't like it, don't get it. It's not built for you.

I feel like that's looking at things from a strictly glass-half-empty POV. That's true that it is priced out of reach for the vast majority of us, but this Mustang isn't meant to be attainable. This Mustang is meant to be the pinnacle of what Multimatic (and Ford) are able to create. It is meant to be the Mustang with an outlandish budget to reach heights of performance comparable to other unobtainable supercars in the price range. If you want a more attainable Mustang, good for you because there is the GT, GT PP2, Mach 1, Bullit, GT350, GT500, Dark Horse, etc. There are so many V8 Mustangs in the past decade that have stellar performance without being 6 figures. This Mustang is meant to be a supercar and the vast majority of new supercars are unobtainable to the extremely vast majority of people.

And you're right, less than 5% of people probably will track it, but this goes for plenty of supercars unfortunately, they're garage queens for most rich folk. Multimatic is for sure the ones that deserve praise in terms of chassis and suspension tuning, but Ford at least gets some credit for building that legendary Predator engine and being as ambitious in the first place to actually push the idea of building a halo car after the Ford GT.

Let's see the ring track time first before we complain about power. The materials, aero, dry sump and transaxle might be well enough. The GT3 RS does 6.50 with roughly 500hp and it's still faster than a C7 ZR-1, C8 Z06 and maybe a C8 ZR-1.

This car is built for speed and handling. If it needed more horsepower, it would have more horsepower.

It's sad that 815hp is a 'letdown' but here we are
For a regular GT500 tier car, it would be fine.

But for 325-400+k?

YOu bet it's a disappointment.

I have been fangirling over this car since I first saw the concept before the GTD was even announced.

But after the ZR1 came and stole its thunder, it really needed to reach for the starts, not offer the saem engine/supercharger combo you can get from your dealer.

The suspension is great, but is it an extra 250-350+ k great?

And the sub 7 minute ring time was a given. It needes to get deep into the 6 minute time frame to justify the price and the hype they've been giving it. It needs to touch the GT2 RS, not just the GT3. and the ZR1 looks to be BEATING the GT2 RS if reports are to be beleived. Now we get BARELY over 800 HP when dodge has been providing more than that for far cheaper. And the ZR1 embarasses that number - even the torque is way higher than the GTD. 664 lb-ft? Serious? If ever there was a moment to do a turbo 5.0, 5.2, whatever, this was it. Sheesh.

If the GTD came out 6 months ago, it would be a different story. It would a GT500 that handles like a dream. Instead, they drag their feet, the corvette comes in and completely embarasses it - and it's not even a one-off hideously expensive experiment!

Sad day.
