I understand OP.

It is misleading and the claimed HP by manufacturers are totally different.

Americans like huge numbers and they do everything to claim that.

European car makers underestimate their crank HP so the advertised crank HP is very close to the the wheel HP. When putting the car on the dyno, there is no difference in the advertised hp.

BMW is the king in advertising low crank HP and they almost always have more WHP than the advertised HP. This makes you very happy when putting the car on the dyno.

Americans.. yep.. they claim BIG numbers because it's a cultural thing, they do that with anything and everything.. "big, bigger, biggest", but when you put them to the test on the dyno, they make you cry.

That's why many European "low" hp vehicles are faster than the American "high" hp vehicles.

Americans should stop over exaggerating things.

Pretty sure BMW is the only manufacturer that gives us RWHP figures instead of crank figures.
BMW and Porsche underrate their hp numbers which is much better than the other way around ! Otherwise it is usually 15% driveline loss to get to the real hp numbers where the rubber meets the road...You can see that a 450 hp 911 Carrera S being faster than a "650" hp Camaro ZL1 ! Of course lighter weight and better traction are part of the equation too.

Sure, but in the last 20 years they've elicited a level of arousal similar to a brand new, top of the line washing machine when you close the door with a satisfying, mature 'thud' on a load full of Lacoste polo shirts and Lululemon yoga pants.

If he wants what the Brochure is advertising then he should be a Mid or Rear Engine car!! Simple enough, and even then those shed a few HP Numbers from the Mid Mounted Trans to the wheel. If you really want to help him/her, give the % of Power that is lost in transfer from the Crank to the Rear wheels. His comment is a bit laughable though.

There is no over exaggeration. They advertise the car comes with an engine that makes 500 hp.....because it does.
If people can't wrap their heads around drivetrain loses, that's their problem.

If people can't wrap their heads around drivetrain loses, that's their problem.
Except that this number is totally useless for people... It looks nice but uneducated people actually believe that they get a 500hp car where in all reality they get a car that gets smoked by almost every 450hp car...

It's just a different mentality. You guys like big theoretical numbers where in Europe we prefer more realistic numbers and events. HP ratings, one-foot rollouts, prepped surfaces...

You clearly did not understand what I wrote.
I suppose it's a difference in culture. If Europeans are used to cars being sold with wheel hp being advertised and then buy an American car not knowing engine hp is the standard, I could see how that could appear misleading.
Need to compare stats in the same units of measure. 500hp crank vs 450hp wheel is not an apples-to-apples comparison.
