“[Ford CEO] Jim Farley has mentioned, and we agree, that we’re doubling down on our V8,” said Laurie Transou, global chief engineer for the Ford Mustang, according to the Australian outlet Drive. “As long as we can possibly sell our V8, we’re going to.”

“We’re constantly looking at what our customers want and making sure we do everything we can to deliver what they want,” said Transou. In addition to the V8, Ford is keeping the manual transmission. “As long as our customers are desiring manual transmission and there’s a market for it, we would continue to offer manual transmission,” added Transou.

It is so absurd that "making ICE illegal" is even a possibility. So much government overreach is tolerated now. F$%^ the EPA.
The EPA has nothing to do with ICE vehicle bans. The Clean Air Act (CAA) from the EPA has been around since the 1970s. The legislation that's changed is from California. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) adopts its own restrictions, and a dozen states follow their lead.

You know what I'd really like to see? Ford making a smaller naturally aspirated V8 that puts out 240-360 HP (so it doesn't cannibalize from the Coyote's sales), can fit in a smaller car (think Cayman/Boxster to the 911), has good throttle response at low RPMs for daily driving at minimum, and gets as good mileage as the current 2.3L I-4 EcoBoost.

That said I can't imagine Ford taking that big of a risk, and I imagine hitting those two latter points would take a lot of research and development time to accomplish, if they even could do so in the first place.

scotus ruled on this its called chevron deference. OR siding with the experts ie "government agencies" now the epa has to prove what they are requiring actually has a meaningful impact or the manufacturers can sue and require proof or ignore it as its baseless.

This is all well and good - so long as Ford innovates moving forward and builds actual GREAT V8 engines and manual transmissions. Do t just give us old or under-invested tech snd tell us just to be glad we even have a v8 and manual.

How about invest in the 8 like you did with ecoboost and make it a viable top notch powerhouse as well as more efficient.

totally possible and well within Ford’s caosbilities.
mand how about we get better transmissions. Just implement them across the lineup of Ford vehicles and let economy of scale bring the costs down.

You're asking for a bundle of contradictions. If you make a naturally-aspirated V8 with tiny cylinders, you're losing more of your energy to cooling and it's inherently less efficient due to the way the flame front propagates versus an undersquare engine. You have to rev to get the horsepower, and you won't have low-end torque as you have neither displacement nor boost.

I'd argue for focusing on making the V8 the enthusiast engine, make the manual as crispy as you can deliver it, and let it be the car for the people who want smiles-per-gallon.

when a ICE car can't pass government mandated mileage requirements with a stick, they will be gone

You people who have optioned for a 3 pedal GT are already paying a tax of $1000 dollars because your car missed the fuel mileage mandates by something like 1 MPG

My 2024 5.0 10 speed slush box gets an EPA estimated 15 city, 24 highway, 18 combined estimated MPG, and because it has an automatic is exempt from the gas guzzler tax

A similar car with the 6 speed gets an EPA estimated 14 city, 23 highway, 17 combined MPG

5.6 gallons per mile with the automatic, 5.9 with the 6 speed...again a $1000 penalty

Once the Feds, or CA, MA or some other state says to be sold it has to meet some arbitrary mileage requirements that the stick can't meet, the stick is toast.

And if you don't think that day is coming try to register a new diesel truck in MA after 12/31/24

Thanks for the heads-up. I know next to nothing about engine design despite having a computer game that focuses a lot on that and car design in general.
