First oil change after break-in + service package?

My question is when to do first oil change after break-in ? I've heard lots of different things about this from waiting a bit because of the extremely tight tolerances on modern engines to let them actually seat in to place. To doing an oil change right at 1000 miles break in ect. Im wondering what the guys at Ford Performance or top engine builders would say? Also anyone know how the pre paid maintenance package i bought from Ford works? Do i just ask for an appointment or do they go by a certain schedule or time to bring my car in for service?

Regarding break-ins and first oil changes, I'm offering some links below. The topics of break-in, oil type/brands and the maintenance schedule produce a wide range of comments and beliefs. Follow your heart. ❤:giggle:

- The minimum standard for upkeep is what's described and listed the Owners Manual

- Use replacement parts, liquids or materials that meet or exceed the standard

- Document any maintenance or repair activities, with log books, photos, Ford Pass App, etc.

- The engine and drivetrain need a warm-up. Afterwards, work it, stress it, push it, but don't abuse it. Or if you do, be prepared to replace parts sooner than expected. Nothing wrong with approaching or exceeding the limits. Just don't be surprised if repair requirements accelerate (pun not intended)

I did my first oil change at 1300ish miles with PUP and a Ford filter....same as Skye uses I believe. I bought the oil and filter cheap from Amazon and the dealer did the work (great job) for $35 while I watched. Next one will be between 5 and 6 thousand miles. I didn't pre-pay for a maintenance package.

With my dealer, I just tell them what I want and when, and it gets done with a free loaner car. My car came with a scratched rear facia on the "bumper" and they replaced it perfectly. I trusted them so I accepted the car. So far, they have been the best dealer I've ever dealt with. I like things done my way when it's my money and my car. At 3400 miles my car runs great and uses no oil. I just varied my speed and ran it up to 5000 now and then. None of the dyno bullshit tuners want you to pay for so they can pay for their dyno. Do it your way is my free advice. It's your car and your money.

As far as service packages, my wife has one on her Lincoln. A dealer will go by time passed and oil life. We brought it in for some warranty issues and asked while it’s there can they do it’s first oil change? It was at 35% I think, and they said no problem. The software updates took 5 hours, so they shuttled her to work, and when the car was done, they drove her car to her work and she drove home in it. Oil change, tire rotation, updates, no charge.

Every dealer seems different, so best to ask what you want done and how they will cover it. Our dealer also offers mobile service, where a tech actually comes to your house and will do oil changes, fluids, updates, recalls tire rotation…etc. in your driveway. All at no extra charge. I’m going to look into that option. Curious as to how they lift the car…some fancy mobile lift unit or just jacks.

Personally I plan to go Motorcraft full synth oil/filter at 1,000 miles.

Curious as to how they lift the car…some fancy mobile lift unit or just jacks.
Last year, I used the mobile service for a BCM re-flash, as part of a S550 recall. While there, I got a tour of the van.

I asked about maintenance, how heavy they could go. General maintenance, to include fluid changes, filters, brakes, maybe a water pump. Thinks like that.

Specific to oil changes, they remove all they can first via a vacuum wand through the dipstick tube. Later, they jack the car with a jack and stands, remove the belly pan and change the filter.

The vans are setup with at least two tanks: one for waste oil, the other new. Shelves for the day's parts, tools, etc. If the customer had a unique request or requirement, the jugs of that oil would just be placed on the shelf. I forget the oil typically placed in the tank. Probably Motorcraft Blend.

The tech told me they were setup to do work in virtually any condition, outside on the pavement or inside the garage. If in-garage is not available, I suspect during rain or snow, most activities would be re-scheduled.

The vans being used in my area...the dealer must be within 10 miles / 16 kms for the service to be available. In more rural areas, there may be some flexibility on distance.

This is very accurate information. I had the service package on my 2015 MKX and they serviced it every 5k miles, I did it myself on the 2,500 miles between, and continued on the 3k marker ever since.

My opinion is factory recommendations are the bare minimums to get the car out of warranty, then set you up for a replacement vehicle as it is their job to sell vehicles.

I know that Rangerrover/Landrover do it this way too, they suck it out through the top of the motor.

I can’t imagine only sucking the oil through the top is a proper drain. If that’s how mobile service is done, I’ll take my car in to the dealer.

I’m thinking maybe, since they have to get underneath anyway to change the filter, they would drain the last bit of oil out the drain hole, without having to worry about spilling the full 10 qts.

I need to talk to a mobile tech and see exactly what they do.

Mobile tech prolly does it out the bottom, but thats just a guess.

LR/RR dealers do the top down method

OP have you seen the number of recalls Ford has out there on their modern engines? Ford could definitely tighten their tolerances by a lot. 😂 😂 😂

As for your service package you have, just schedule the appointment at the dealer when it is convenient for you. Tell them you have the servicing package and they can look it up for you. Even better, call ahead to schedule and while on the phone have them look up your package and confirm with you that they see you paid for it already.

For what it's worth, here's what I've done with every Ford product I've owned, none of which ever consumed oil or had any engine trouble:

First thousand miles (or owner's manual break-in period) follow manual suggestions, which usually say to drive a variety of speeds (which I take to mean a variety of RPMs) but don't push the high RPMS. Then, first oil change at 3000 miles on older models without an oil life monitor, or oil life 25% if there is an oil life monitor.

Thanks for the video links.
So, there's a high level of break-in contaminants in the first thousand miles. What is the evidence that this is a problem for engine life if the oil is not changed until, say, 3000 miles?
