Well, if its really is 11v volts he shouldn't be able to start the car let alone drive for long without it dying.

I suspect the battery is taking a shit and hes not getting an accurate reading.

I've had many flat batteries / failed batteries over the years and never had a 'charge system fault warning' without there being a charge system fault

you can drive around for days on a bad alternator charge your battery so you dont stall out on the way there and bring it in to be diagnosed

Taking your advice. I removed the battery and will hook it up to a charger overnight.

Well, one assumes the correct battery is fitted!

Yes indeed, as the car warning says - 'charging system fault', the alternator is part of that system but not all of it.
