I’d be pretty fired up if I got my new car back like that - I would definitely take this up with the manager of the shop if some smoothbrain scared up my new wheels.

Every tire change I've had, they'e NEVER been able to truly do no damage, no matter what I ask.

Thus I've researched buying my own tire machine to avoid damage. You can get cheap Chinese ones with hydraulic assist like the KT-2002 for $300-$500. People have also tricked out the super-cheap Harbor Freight tire changers with success too.

Now, when I bring wheels to a shop, I always clean them beforehand and remove all the wheel weights with a heat gun Goo Gone the residue away, so they can start fresh on a clean surface for wheel weights. I recommend always bringing wheels separate, off the car, so there's no chance of them damaging the vehicle too. Also remove the center caps (so they don't gouge them out), maybe even tape up the inner barrels where the center caps go to avoid scratches from them not using a clean/plastic cone on the tire machine.

Overreacting?

I think you’re “underreacting”. I’d lose my $hit.
In today’s day and age there is no secret that your wheels are the same as the body of your car.
The shop is clearly incompetent. Knowing the way these things go you’re not likely to get any relief. Best you can do is find someone to refinish the rim and tell the shop to pay for it and see what you can squeeze them for.
And “my GOD” don’t ever go back there again

Similar thing happened with my wife's E450 coupe, the tire shop got me a new wheel from Mercedes and I sold the scratched one on offer up. Kind of a pain, but worked out.
