Dark Horse is a ā€œregular productionā€ Mustang, but, it’s only available on an ā€œallocationā€ basis like the Ford Performance vehicles. Ford’s allocation ā€œsystemā€ is very much like gambling at a casino in that the odds are stacked against you from the start.

1) Ford grants allocations mostly to large volume stealerships, who love to add on $$$ over top of MSRP and they can afford to sit on those vehicles for months on end.
2) You can’t just run down to your local stealership and say ā€œget me a Dark Horseā€, you have to ensure that they actually have an allocation slot FIRST. Any dealer can order one, but only a dealer with an allocation will actually get one. MAYBE.
3) So let’s say you have a dealer with an allocation, you agree on a price, money is exchanged, and an agreement in place. First dibs go to Ford execs. Second dibs go to Leno, other celebrities interested, media and influencers and lastly, the rest of the great unwashed masses. At this point, the car is out and generally able to be ordered.
4) Once the order banks open, Ford will schedule line production work to get slots of orders processed. The order in which the allocated orders are processed is a galactic mystery and if I’m being completely honest I don’t even think Ford fully knows. You could have your ticket pulled right after Leno or you could be waiting 600+ days.
5) vendor parts shortages can and do affect when certain models get scheduled and built
6) UAW strikes can and do affect when certain models get scheduled and built
7) etc.

If it was easy, then every two bit, knuckle dragging YouTuber would have one.

The best opportunity was before 2025 price bump release, people had ALL of may/june/July to buy one with little to no ADM.

A dark horse is far more unique than a basic c8. But enjoy if you go that route

Not for nothing, but Chevy dealers are more than willing to charge over MSRP too.

In 2016 I went Raptor shopping. It took me 2 months, and over 50 dealers called to find one that would sell at MSRP. It was a Clown show of stupid dealer tricks. I got all the way to about 15 minutes into paperwork to have one stealership drop a 15k ADM on me, and I left quickly.
about 9 weeks in a dealership in Front Royal, VA agreed to MSRP and a decent trade for me.

MDH is still an allocation car so you get to play ā€œnext levelā€ stealership games, but not the advanced level for the Ford Performance line up.

Geez guys.

All this talk is making me feel better about making some last-minute investments in Mach 1 stock. The DH is for sure cool and all but I’m not thinking it’s 10 grand ADM cooler than a ā€˜23 Mach. They were even discounted toward the end of the run.

My DH: $68K
Starting price for Z06: $113,795

These two cars do not compete against one another for buyers. Oh, and my last sports car was a C7 Z06 (purchased new in 2016).

If you can't find a DH for MSRP with no ADM, you're not looking hard enough. Took me ~2 weeks to find mine on the assembly line. Picked it up a few weeks later.
