Just picked up my brand new 2026 GT convertible yesterday from the dealership. Before driving it off the lot, I checked with the service department if there are any recalls outstanding. None. All up to date.
Parked it in my garage at home, pulled the park brake lever to engage park brake and shut off the car.

Today I went for a drive and when I got back home I followed the same steps as the day before. Parked in the garage, put gear in neutral (manual) and pulled the park brake (while still depressing the brake pedal). This time the dash kept flashing the brake icon at me (!) with a message "Park brake not applied". No reason as to why. I shut off the car, turned it on again in accessory mode, pulled the park brake and still the same thing. After repeatedly shutting off the car fully and turning it back on into accessory mode would it finally engage the park brake again.

I checked the Ford app. No messages or alerts for the car.
Nothing else I could find on the dash of the car either. Just the message saying "Park brake not applied" without any reason why.

Car is brand new. Just owned it for 1 day. Before I go paranoia mode back to the dealership with it, I want to make sure I didn't do anything wrong? Are there certain circumstances the park brake cannot engage that I should be aware of? Or was this simply some sort of computer glitch? I parked the car in 1st gear so that it can't roll away on me if the electronics do decide to fail.

Mine does this if I pull the handbrake too quickly before coming to a complete stop or if I open the door before it fully engages. I think the computer briefly loses track of the present state of the brake and panics. Since it's likely unsure whether it's engaged or not, it assumes it's not and asks you to engage it.

A little annoying, but I just disengage and re-engage the parking brake and it goes away.

I could be wrong but I don’t think you need to go into accessory mode to activate the parking brake. At least not in my overseas (Australia spec) model.

Kinda like the ‘turn off interior motion detection’ popup that goes away if a door is opened before you respond thing?

Mine doesn't go away if I open the door, the message will remain there for about a minute and then just assume I want to keep it on.

The parking brake message, in my experience, will keep blinking until you reset the park brake yourself.

Park brake should activate fine with key off/car off.

On my 2024, you can hear the parking brake engage when you pull up on the little lever. I have never had the issue you describe, but hearing the brake engage should ease any worries about what is being displayed. But, no doubt, the display should not be erroneous regardless. Probably some minor electrical or electro-mechanical glitch that the dealer should be able to check out for you at convenient time.

By his description, it sounds like he has the PP option with the drift brake handle. Its a different system than standard GT.

Just a thought, but it is new and it might still be learning.. heres why i say that.
I got my pre-production 2024 last april with 500 miles on it (great deal) but knowing it was a Jan/2023 model, I knew I would have to replace the battery... eventually. I assume the battery was from 2022 and that since 3 plus years it had only gone 500 miles, I assume it didn't get much time to be used, and they probably had to jump it alot.

When I got it, i would be getting out of the car and the music from the radio would play for like another 5-6 seconds after I had switched it off and opened the door, which was very annoying. Likewise the ASS function didn't really work, but I got a new battery like 2 weeks ago, and now the music/radio shuts off instantly as soon as the door opens like my Bronco and every other ford I have had. It took a week or so, then the ASS actually started woking. Couple other things were wonky like the 2005 Ford noises have stopped etc.

Might be related might not. However from what I did read it was recommended that after I got my new battery I lock the car and let it sit for 8 hours (like overnight) for the system to relearn the new voltage. But the drawback is the ASS works now. So it might be because it is super new, like a cranky baby ready to learn. (maybe.. you know what I'm saying )

i have this issue too. the good thing about manuals is that you can keep it in 1st and it wont roll, but yes, as other people have said you can simply disengage and then reengage the parking brake and it will work. car decides it doesn't know what to do for whatever reason if you decide to take your seatbelt off or open your car door or whatever.

this message usually happens when the vehicle isn't sure if the park brake actually applied. these modern Fords run a ton of plausibility checks, and if one isn't quite right, it assumes something's wrong, since a false positive is safer than a false negative. it could be absolutely nothing, or it could be a parking brake motor going out, or something else. if it hasn't happened since, there's no real need to worry. if it happens again, i recommend taking it to your dealer to get it checked out
